2007 Kiowa County Outstanding 4-H Youth Named
Bruce Fickenscher
CSU Extension/Kiowa County
November 16, 2007
Four Kiowa County 4-H youth, two
juniors (ages 8 and 12) and two seniors (ages 14 and 16) received
Outstanding 4-H Youth awards at the annual Kiowa County 4-H Achievement
Banquet held November 2, 2007. The annual awards were sponsored by Kiowa
County National Bank.
Courtney Johnson and Ryan Koeller
are this years Outstanding Junior Youth recipients. Courtney is the
daughter of Mike and Martha Johnson and is a three-year member. Courtney’s
projects have taken her to the state level all three years with one
receiving a Unit Champion place. Courtney is also currently her club
secretary.
Ryan is completing his first
"official" year is 4-H, but has been interested and "bleeding green" ever
since his big brother started. This being his first year, his loaf of
yeast bread received the Grand Champion ribbon at the Colorado State Fair.
Ryan is the son of Marvin and Gail Koeller.
Outstanding Senior Youth for 2007
were Vincent Koeller and Chevaun Glover. Vincent is a seven-year member
who completed nine projects this year. A consistent competitor at the
Colorado State Fair, Vincent has earned Grand Champion, Reserve Grand
Champion, and Unit Champion and Reserve Champion placings in Entomology
and Woodworking. State competitions have also included trips to the Youth
Hunter Education Challenge and the Colorado State Fair Trap Shooting
Contest. Vincent is the son of Marvin and Gail Koeller.
Chevaun Glover is the daughter of
Richard and Koy Glover. Chevaun is an eight-year member and her projects
have taken her and her team partner to the Colorado State Fair Creative
Cooks Contest. From this, Chevaun and her partner have won Grand Champion
and Reserve Champion honors. Chevaun and her teammate have also won trips
to cooking schools in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Johnson and Wales in
Denver. Chevaun’s other passion is sewing and this has earned her a trip
to the Colorado State Fair Fashion Revue this year.
The 2007 Kiowa County Friend of 4-H
began her career in the fourth grade. Her projects included knitting,
crocheting, and macramé. Later in her 4-H career, crocheting and macramé
were dropped and knitting became the main focus. Unit championships and
reserves started to accumulate. She won a State Fair "Grand Champion" one
year, and "Reserve Grand Champion" another on her afghan project.
Numerous sweaters have been knitted
for family members and friends, as have afghans and bed coverings for area
high school graduates. She has also knitted caps, booties, and blankets
for premature babies in children’s hospital wards and, most recently,
those born with AIDS. Since becoming a Kiowa County 4-H Leader six years
ago, she has tried to pass on her "passion" to those under her tutelage
and guidance. The Kiowa County Friend of 4-H award was Ms. Susan
Greenfield. This award is nominated by the clubs and selected by a vote of
the Kiowa County 4-H Council.
The Youth are selected based on a
review of the national Report Form, including all their years of 4-H
membership, combined with a personal interview with the judges. Junior
recipients received laser etched 4-H plaques and the senior recipients
received hand-cut 4-H clover plaques, all sponsored by Kiowa County
National Bank.
