About Town

The Crow-Luther Fine Arts Center marquee proclaims "Happy
100th Birthday Myra Watts. Imagine being alive one century! Lamira
(Mosher) Watts has just succeeded in turning that century mark on October
24th. Myra has seen many changes and lived through many challenges in her
100 years since being born at Prairie Queen, Colorado. She was always a
hard worker on the farm as a child, on the ranch with her husband, and as
a mother raising four children. We salute you, Myra, and celebrate your
accomplishments in life. Myra was feted with a nice party at the Weisbrod
Nursing Home on the 24th. There was also a lovely party of family and
friends on October 27th at Prairie Pines Assisted Living Facility. Myra’s
three children and many of her grandchildren and other family members from
around the country were here to cheer her on. Her sister, Pansy Foxworthy,
resides at Prairie Pines. We believe you are the oldest citizen in Kiowa
County, too, Myra! Ida’s tip of the hat to you and may God bless you.
A very Happy Birthday goes to Delores Rector of Eads and
her twin brother, Tom Price of Stratton, whose family hosted a wonderful
80th birthday party. A number of relatives and friends from Eads and other
communities traveled to Limon to celebrate with them last Saturday.
Delores’s family lived near Agate, Colorado where they spent their younger
days raising sheep. Tom now is a cattle rancher. We send our "jolly good
fellows" to both of them.
David and Betty (Harrison) Jones stopped by the K & M
Ranch House at noon Friday for lunch while returning from Texas. The
couple was returning from a fabulous reunion at a resort with some of
Betty’s college friends. They also visited her sister, Nina, near Dallas.
What fun!
After the funeral services for Ulla Robertson in Ordway, a
meal was hosted in the new Sugar City Senior Citizen Center by friends
from the Haswell-Arlington communities. Ulla was a much loved 4-H leader
and friend to many folks.
Oops, got a correction: The 4-H Awards Banquet is at the
Plainview School, Friday, November 2nd at 6:00 p.m. hosted by 4-H members
from the Sheridan Lake-Towner community.
Day-time football games are best because one can see
better and take great photos. Betsy Barnett has done a super job of
announcing the play action this fall. You can really hear better…even from
your car, where I (Doris) watch! The cheerleaders looked outstanding and
best of all when they ran out to the 50 yard line to do their dance, the
setting sun made their long hair look so golden as it also danced in the
wind. (Doris you are waxing poetic on us!)
Larry and Nola Engstrom took off for Denver last Friday
afternoon to visit their family, especially Nola’s grandson, Adam. There
they proceeded to the World Series baseball game on Saturday! Nola was
beaming in anticipation of that experience and it was all they thought it
would be. They enjoyed a wonderful time, even if the Rockies lost.
That creative artisan, Jo Shoemaker, decorated Cinnamon
Joe’s in red and purple for our Red Hatter’s meeting last Saturday. Alice
Weil was delighted to draw the prize of a pretty red, huggable teddy bear
that Jo added her artistic touches to. Alice declared the bear will sit
comfortably on her couch. Betty Crow was equally pleased to draw the
monthly hatter gift. The Classy Lassies will sojourn to Granada on
November 30th for their yearly holiday dinner at Chez Duvall, mais oui.
The group also plans to warble a Christmas tune or two on December 11th at
Prairie Pines, and Weisbrod Nursing Home. There is no meeting in December.
On a sad note, we wish to extend our deep, sincere
sympathy to Cheryl and Gary Davis, of Eads, after the sudden death of
Cheryl’s 48 year old brother in Washington State. We send our sympathy
along to the families as well.
We have another creative soul in Shelly Meyers, who
designed a striking colored program for last Friday’s home football game.
Shelly spotlighted the seven (yes SEVEN!) Ead’s senior boys were presented
with their biographies and photos. This made for a great informative and
attractive program. Congratulations, by the way, to these young men: A.J.
Bolin, Brandon Dunlap, Kenan Gooden, Kevin Lindholm, Jacob Kraft, Drew
Koch, and Wes Richardson! Ida’s tip of the helmet to you all.
Alice Glover is home after about six weeks of
rehabilitation after surgery. She and her family are glad to have her
granddaughter, Chelsea, home for a few days from Hawaii where she is
stationed with the Navy. They are pleased to meet her boyfriend, also! And
our best wishes go out to you, Alice, as you get back into the swing of
things at home.
The 15th Annual Kiowa County Road Rally sounded exciting.
I’ve (Doris) seen some of those questions and clues in the past. What a
challenge!
Congratulations to the Eads MatchWits team who won, and
will be seen on Rocky Mountain PBS Television on November 11 at 4:00 p.m.
Renee Wall, down in Arizona, and I (Doris) send warm congratulations. As
former sponsors, we are really interested in the academic endeavors of
Knowledge Bowl and MatchWits. Congratulations to the team of Charlie
Philpy, Cardon Brandt, Chandni Merchant, and Tyler Fox. Other team members
who traveled with them to the CSU-Pueblo campus include Lisa Miller, Cory
Adamson, Remington Brandt, Jake Fox, and Bailey King, along with sponsors,
Sue Fox and Carole Spady.
More congratulations to Eads Junior Tyler Fox, who
qualified to compete in the State Cross Country meet with the Lamar Team.
Way to go, Tyler!
Several Eads FFA members traveled to Indianapolis,
Indiana, for the National FFA Convention. We heard that the convention was
featured several times on TV. Eads students who participated were: Carrie
Robertson, Andrea Williams, Jennifer Negley, Ciara Lyon, Brittani Filbeck,
Lori Weirich, Hunter Krum, Matt Rittgers, Travis Eames, Ryan Lane, and
Jake Fox. Lance Jagers was their instructor and sponsor. What a great
opportunity for these students.
Enjoy each beautiful fall day, for we all know the ol’ man
lurks around the corner ready to blow the cold north wind down our necks.
By the by, he is not related to Frosty or Jack; more loveable winter
characters. Have a great week ahead. A word of wisdom to leave with you:
"A good friend overlooks our broken down gate and admires the flowers in
our window." Anonymous
