Eagle Wrestlers Gain Experience at State Meet

It was another exciting weekend at the Pepsi Center as 16 of the best of the best wrestlers in all 4 classifications, 2A-5A, competed for the top 6 placings in each of their 14 weight classes. Even though the Eads Eagles didn’t come home with any medals, the time spent and experienced gained was well worth it. One of the down sides, as with any sport, is the fact that we have to say goodbye to the seniors. Josh Fry and Kelly Lindholm’s leadership, dedication, and great attitude has shown the under classmen what true champions are made of.

Josh Fry had one of the toughest matches of his career for his first match of the tournament wrestling the 1st place winner from another region. Ahead most of the match and tied 2-2 late in the 3rd, Fry was on the bottom and almost had an escape and a reversal to win but just couldn’t quite escape as his opponent met him move for move and finally had Fry for the pin with little time left.

Kelly Lindholm and Brandon Cordova both went 2 and 2 for the weekend drawing some of the tougher competition in their weights. A large part of seeding in the state tournament has to do with the "luck of the draw" and placing in regionals. Cordova’s first match was against Mikael Smith from Nucla who won the tournament becoming one of the elite four time state champions. The other wrestler Brandon lost to placed 3rd. Like Cordova, Kelly Lindholm also lost to the state champion and 3rd place finisher in two very good matches.

Hunter Uhland was the only other Eagle wrestler to come away with a win for the weekend, losing his first match in a nail biter. Both his losses were also to state placers.

Even though the 3 freshmen, Branden Dunlap, Jacob Kraft, and Kevin Lindholm didn’t win a match, they came away with the satisfaction of making it to state, a great time and the most important, experience. Now they know what it is all about and what they will have to work and improve on to make it again next year.

Congratulations wrestlers, on a great year.
