About Town

The choir has decided to sing the Handel’s Messiah at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 12th rather than at 7:00 p.m. Please note this change of time. You will surely want to be on time to hear the Kings Kids Sing. Among the soloists are Burl Scherler, Sylvia Weeks, Jessica James, and Gary Liesen. The women’s triple trio will sing also. Another addition to the program is an euphonium solo. (I needed to ask, "Is this an instrument?" (smile). The Director invites the public, "Come to the concert and stay for refreshments and visiting at the United Methodist Church.

The All-High Plains League Volleyball team was released last week. Congratulations to Alysha Uhland of Eads and Miranda Weber of Plainview who are listed on the First Team and to Brittany Peck who is listed on the Honorable Mention Team.

Tim and Sylvia Weeks were in Denver several days over the weekend to visit with relatives and to enjoy the sites and shopping.

Ronald and Shirley Mays hosted a family dinner on Thanksgiving at their home near Kit Carson. Max Mays and Maxine Mays from Eads were also guests for the day.

I want to make an addition to the news about Carolyn Moore of Brownsville, Texas, of whom I mentioned last week. Her new husband is Kenneth Gober of the same city. They were married on November 17th.

A number of Red Hatter ladies met at the Our Place dining room Saturday morning for a meeting and lunch. The proprietor, Cindy Williams, and her staff had set the tables with pink and white table settings with glowing red and white candles. We were glad to have ladies come who hadn’t been with us before, Lougene Jacobs and Jo Shoemaker. We also had guests, Carla Gifford and her mother, Irma Kreihbel, from Deer Creek, Oklahoma, and her daughter-in-law, Daisy Gifford, of Colorado Springs and friend, Elise Deverman. Our next gathering will be on Tuesday, December 21st when we will go to Weisbrod Nursing Home to sing carols with the residents about 6:15 p.m. Please do feel welcome to come join the fun. Afterwards we are going to the Our Place meeting room for treats and visiting. Sis Howard served as the co-coordinator of the meeting since our chairwoman was out-of-town.

Terry and Arêta Laird and Leslie, Bruce, and Shalyn were dinner guests of Bob and Janet Laird in Lamar on Thanksgiving Day.

The Middle School basketball teams had several games this week and next Tuesday they will have six games here at Eads with Cheyenne Wells teams. Also that evening, there will be the annual chili supper at the fire house and the really big event is when Santa Claus comes to bring treats and to take photos with the children. That same evening the Lions Club will be meeting at 7:00 p.m. at Our Place. My, could there be anything else going on?

Congratulations and thank you’s, go to Murial Wiser, who is the "Employee of the Month" at Weisbrod. Her name and photo is on a lovely plaque near the entry way and she even has a special parking space!

Fans can see the first basketball game here on Friday, December 3rd with Fowler. The games begin at 4:00 p.m. and the next day our Wrestling team will be in Akron.

We were glad to have Mike Arth visit us. He is a good helper to change our alarm batteries and clocks and this time he decorated our Christmas tree and also set up decorations in Ida’s room at Weisbrod.

The Shalberg-Woelk families and other relatives gathered at Merle and Carol Shalberg’s home near Sheridan Lake for Thanksgiving Day. It was a good time for the cousins and children to get to visit and play together.

It was good to see Oscar and Brandi (Weirich) Ridgeway who were here to see Oscar’s mother, Sue Musgrave, and Brandi’s grandmother, Shirley Weirich. Brandi has her Batchelor’s Degree now and is working for an accounting firm in Denver. They have a nice home in Highland’s Ranch. The Ridgeways also attended the parties for Oscar’s cousin, Joe Musgrave who was home from Korea.

I want to remind citizens everywhere who read this column to make time to take canned or non perishable foods to the FFA building or the Social Services Office on Maine Street. Some residents of our county could use toys and gifts for people of all ages. If you don’t have food or gifts to share, then I suggest you could share your time by visiting others or just sitting by a resident at Weisbrod or someone in their home. Lately, two older ladies have said to me, "I just don’t have anyone here". Meaning no family living here. It is lonely for them and others. I have learned that you don’t even have to talk…just a touch means a lot.

We had a long Thanksgiving table laden with wonderful foods made by Wanda Lessenden, Bonnie Lessenden, Madonna Pollreis and myself. The men moved some furniture so we could sit around the table. We brought Hazel Spady, my Aunt Rosamond Pollries, and my Mother, Ida, from the Nursing Home. It was such a nice day to visit.

Darrel and Jodi Stolzenberger hosted a large Thanksgiving dinner at their home for family and friends Thursday.

Another big gathering was at Vi Koch’s home on Maine. Her granddaughter, Krystal Koch, was here from Rifle where she works in a prison. Steve Young’s daughter, Heather, and husband and baby girl were here from Nebraska also. Vi said, the baby has pretty red hair like her mother, Heather’s.

Cardon and Joyce Berry spent Thanksgiving in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Joyce said that their usual four hour trip from Fort Collins turned in to seven hours on Sunday because of the snow.

I haven’t seen so many muddy cars for several years. Because of the rain showers and snows, county roads are really muddy around Kiowa County.

During the rain on Saturday, I experienced much kindness from David Crow who called the Michael Service Center. Then Larry Michael came to jump start my van and his son, Bart fixed the battery right in the rain! I really do appreciate those men and I have been thanking God that if the van had to stop, then I was so glad that it happened in my town!

We extend our sympathy to the family of Ruth Fell formerly of Kt Carson. Ruth has lived in the Weisbrod home for several years. She has been blessed with family members who visited her often.

Daisy and Darrell Hebberd returned to Eads after a long time in the Pueblo Hospitals. We hope Darrell is recuperating after those extensive surgeries.

This is the second week of Advent. It is good to see the Christmas trees that are lighted and the pretty decorations are being added to homes and yards about town.

Next Thursday evening, December 9th, is the music program. Grades preschool to 5th grade will perform at 6:30 p.m. and the 6 to 12 grade will be performing at 7:30 p.m. at the Crow-Luther Arts Center.
