Superintendent’s Corner

I am very excited to report that letterman’s jackets are being ordered by many of the students at Eads High School. Mr. Randel and Mrs. Barnett have done a great job rejuvenating the E-Club and sparking interest to increase school spirit. One of the first objectives of the E-Club was to research why students no longer wore letter jackets. The group agreed to promote the jackets and samples were presented. At this time nearly all E-club members have purchased letter jackets with assistance from fund raisers.

The last stage of the Eads High School Air conditioning/Heating project is complete. Air conditioning was installed in the high school last year. The last stage was completed this month which added forced air heating capability to the multi-purpose room and locker rooms. This was an important component as we now have the capability to heat the high school with forced heat if the boiler malfunctions.

We are in the process of finishing the final stage of the Eads Elementary Plumbing Grant. The plumbing was complete at the start of the school year, but contingency grant money was awarded to replace the cabinets in the science lab. The cabinets are in and it is just a matter of getting them plumbed in and set.

I would like to take the opportunity this month to discuss the Bullying Progam at Kiowa County School Dist. RE-1. The students are continually reminded of this program and I think it is important that the community is made aware of it as well. The program basically consists of four steps that the students choose in resolving conflict: 1. Ignore the person causing the conflict, 2. Ask the person to stop, 3. Report the conflict to the staff for assistance, 4. Take the law into your own hands, but suffer the consequences.

This program has been very successful in resolving conflict. If a student does report the incident to a staff member, he/she has the opportunity to address the student creating the issue. All details of the incident are documented and both students are made aware that future incidents will be dealt with firmly. Obviously, this is a very simplified explanation of this program, and each incident is handled individually depending on the severity of the infraction. There will also be a multi-media big screen bullying presentation called "Quest for Respect" on October 28, 2004. Plainview will be visiting on that day to participate in the program.

The Eads FFA Chapter is excited about its latest addition, a model 1010 John Deere tractor with a loader bucket. Romer Young in Holly was generous enough to donate the majority of the price of the tractor to the chapter. The original price was $4500, but Romer Young allowed the FFA chapter to purchase the tractor for what it had remaining in grant money and donations which was $1000. This tractor will be used at the FFA Ag Farm to mow weeds and clean out pens.
