About Town

It is commendable that so many
"Musical Moms" care so much about singing together that some ladies travel
over 30 to 40 miles twice a week to practice for the Fall Sing-a-long
Praise and Thanksgiving Service. This community sing-a-long will be
Sunday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Eads United Methodist Church.
Individuals and groups from the county churches will also share special
numbers. Another interesting performance will be an accordion duet with
guitar accompaniment.
Burrell Wissel was the Honored
Senior Citizen at the Eads-Cheyenne Wells Football game last Friday. He
enrolled in Eads high in 1931 when he was a sophomore and competed in
State Band as a trumpeter. He was a bus driver for both boys and girls
athletic teams so he really enjoys Eads sports and the Broncos. Burrell
was a barber in the military during World War II then his occupation
became barbering. I enjoy Burrell’s humor and the interesting stories he
tells when I visit with him at the Home.
It was so gratifying to see the men
serving and all the women volunteers who had worked during the day to
prepare the chili, bread bowls, bread sticks and desserts for the Mike
Korrell Benefit Dinner at the Eads cafeteria last Friday before the
football game. Many friends from several towns came to support them. Since
Mike is having rather experimental treatments in Houston, he and his wife,
Char, have to fly there every 21 days and it is very costly. It was good
to see the Korrell family and a number of their relatives at the supper.
Our caring hearts go out to them. I was especially glad to see Bill Howard
there who says he is much better after having a kidney transplant.
Shalyn Laird won first with Andrea
Williams winning second and Tallie Hanson capturing third in the FFA Creed
speaking contest last week after a chili supper with parents and guests.
The whole FFA freshman class took part in the competition. I have
witnessed this contest several times and admire the students can memorize
such a long speech.
Bill Trosper traveled to several
golf tournaments in the Kansas area where his son, Ryan, was playing on
the Lamar Community College golf team. Linda and Timy stayed home to care
for the livestock
Mildred Bournes had her "Dream Trip"
as the Weisbrod Nursing Home Queen last week. Bob Howerton took her and
Activity Director, Rhonda Krueger, and nurse, Sharon Barlow, to Cripple
Creek where they enjoyed the shops and lovely fall colors.
**This is Homecoming Week at Eads
where students are working to decorate the gym for the Pep Rally on
Thursday, October 7th at 6:00 p.m. after the Middle School
volleyball and football games. There will be a Spirit Walk and Bon Fire
following the Rally. The Parade will leave from the Hospital on Friday at
2:00 p.m. followed by the high school volleyball games and then the
football game with Walsh.
Haley Gibbs was the guest of honor
for her Bridal Shower Saturday afternoon. Her friend, Darci Weeks made a
delicious cake and mints which was served with lime punch with the help of
other hostesses, Shannon White and Melinda Frazee. Haley is the bride
elect of Jason Reedy of Lamar. They will be married October 16th
in Eads.
Hazel Buck wrote a newsy letter to
Ida Lessenden last week from her Care Home in Elkhart, Kansas. She seems
quite well and enjoys life there. She wrote, "Ida, I have you beat, I am
99 years old." (smile).
Our community has been feeling much
grief and sadness since the death of Tiffany L. Frederick who died
suddenly at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. A very large entourage of
college friends and staff came to her funeral in Eads Monday. The
attractive folder of photos of Tiff and her family explained how she coped
with having Turner Syndrome and experimental injections and medications
she took for the welfare of her health. Tiffany was a well loved and
enjoyed cheerleading and other activities while she was an Eads student.
Many of her Eads classmates attended the services together. Tiffany will
be sadly missed by her friends and family. She is the daughter of Jerry
and Janet (Richards) Frederick.
Forty-nine people boarded a big
beautiful bus in Haswell and Eads for the Diamond Tours to the Smoky
Mountains. The tour was arranged by Wanda and Virgil Lessenden and the
West End Golden Age Seniors. The travelers visited museums, fine dining in
several states, Dolly Parton’s Dollywood, Comedy Barn Theaters, a
Jamboree, Delta River Flat boats, a number of other musical shows and many
shopping and sight seeing tours along the way. People again thank Wanda
for all her work to provide such a great time.
