Library "Good" News

Did you know that you can now check
out music CDs at your public library? Public libraries were named the
distribution point for compensating American consumers in a national class
action lawsuit brought against three of the United States’ largest music
retailers last year. The CDs are going to public libraries as compensation
for CD suppliers overpricing their stock which was seen as infringing on
consumer rights. As a result, Kiowa County Public Library District
received approximately 350 CDs that range from opera to country/western.
Several CDs were duplicates so the collection will house about 100 titles
for check-out. The duplicate CDs will be shared with the schools in the
county. Check-out period will be one week with a 50 cent per day fine for
over dues. Come in and sample some blues, jazz, or maybe some Latin music.
This would be a great opportunity to sample a new genre of music. Broaden
your horizons a bit!
The library received a nice surprise
phone call from Senator Ken Kester of Las Animas in August. The Senator
wanted to let us know that he had applied to the El Pomar Foundation for
grant money for libraries in his district for the 2005 year and that he
had received notification that his request had been granted. Although we
aren’t in his district, we are in his area of southeastern Colorado so he
also applied for a grant for our library as well. He said that he was
aware that the State of Colorado had been unkind to libraries over the
past few years and he wanted to do what he could to help. Now, wasn’t that
nice of him? We can’t even vote for him. We haven’t received official
notification that we will be recipients of a $1000 El Pomar Foundation
Grant in the 2005 year yet. But, even if we don’t receive the grant, it is
reassuring to know that at least one of our state leaders is aware of the
plight of libraries statewide and is willing to attempt to do something to
help.
