About Town

By Ida and Doris Lessenden

Mary Edith Aldrich and Love Liebl drove down to Guymon, Oklahoma recently to visit with their good friends, Loren and Mae Hiller. They were good friends when their families farmed out west of Eads years ago. The ladies told me that they had such a lovely day with the Hillers, even though it was quite windy. The Hillers took them on a tour of the city and they enjoyed lunch at a Chinese restaurant.

Mildred Michael was hosted with two parties last week to celebrate her 94th birthday. One party was at Weisbrod where her son, Larry, of Eads and daughter, Shirley, from West Virginia, and some grandchildren spent time with her. On Sunday a large gathering of relatives and friends were hosted at the home of her granddaughter, Jodi, and Darrell Stolzenberger in Eads. Mildred said that "Several of her grandchildren came from Kansas also." She and grandson, Bart Michael share birthdays in the same week.

We thought the Eads School Band really sounded grand at the football game here last Friday. The weather was warm and just fabulous for the night event.

People have been driving and walking by the corner of 13th and Rittgers rather slowly lately because they have been so interested to see what was going to be built when a big hole was dug. Harvey and Clara Hollis’s mobile home had moved to the back of their lot. Then after this weekend, there is a beautiful double wide home moved onto the foundation. Their children, Joyce Warren and Phillip Hollis, several grandchildren and other relatives have been here along with professional workers to help the Hollis’s dream home become a reality.

Eunice Webber and girls, Jeni and Sheri, left Friday for the rehearsal and the wedding of Doug Weber to Elizabeth Sanchez on Saturday. Johnny and Clarence drove up to Pueblo along with other family and friends to attend the happy ceremony and party. The couple was married in Avondale and their wedding reception was in Pueblo West.

We congratulate the Eads High School Golf Team on doing such a good job. We are glad this sport is available to students because it is definitely a life long sport for men and women. .Former Eads High school golfer, Ryan Trosper, is on the traveling golf team for Lamar Community College. Ryan was fortunate to get to work this summer at the Elks Spreading Antler Golf Course south of Lamar. EHS grad, Miles Philpy, is on the Colorado Regis College Golf Team and doing really well too.

We extend our condolences to Don and Charlotte Phillips whose granddaughter, Ashley , lost her 24 year old husband, Ed, near Wright, Kansas in an auto accident. Ashley is the daughter of Justin and Arlene Phillips who live in Spearville, Kansas. Ashley’s Aunt Teresa Witte, said "It is awfully hard to be a widow at age 20 with a 16 month year old daughter and a baby expected to arrive in December." Our hearts go out in sympathy to these dear families.

The Wes Borns Memorial Challenge Shoot was hosted Saturday and Sunday at the La Junta Gun Club. The Colorado Chapter for the Hunt of a Lifetime is a non-profit group to earn money to send children who have serious illnesses under the age of 21 on their dream hunting or fishing trip. Individual and teams of shooters came from all over Colorado and especially from the Eads area to compete in the two day event that was run totally by volunteers and from generous donations. Meals and prizes were awarded also. The Borns family thanks people for their support of this project because it meant so much to their son and nephew, Wes, when their family went on a hunting trip in Africa.

Sis Howard, Robin Musgrave, Barb Seay ,and Doris Lessenden from Eads, along with other ladies many southeastern Colorado town enjoyed a day in Lamar hosted by the Grace Lutheran Church LWML Circle.. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League met for their annual Fall Rally, Bible Studies, and business meeting. A large donation of baby receiving blankets was gathered to give to the Prowers County Medical Center for newborns.

When driving to Lamar and Kit Carson, we have noticed that the newly planted wheat looks beautiful and the Milo crops look generally good except that the heads haven’t turned pink or rust red yet. I have heard some people say that we haven’t had enough hot sunny weather this summer for the grain crops so this could decrease the grain yield.

Eads Middle School staff hosted a large volleyball tournament Saturday. This brought lots of people to town.

I was pleased to hear that several teens and adults did gather at the flag pole on "See You at the Pole Day" to pray with people from all over the nation for our schools, students, staff, and nation.

I visited the Eads meeting of the 10K/5 A Day Diabetes Prevention class Monday afternoon at the High School. I had heard many good things about this three year project which emphasizes walking and eating 5 to 9 vegetables or fruits a day. These classes are administered through a grant from the Cheyenne County Public Health Department with Fae Aldrich as the teacher. She was assisted by Renay Crain and Sherry Emmert of our Kiowa County Health Department. For the past two years, this grant has provided one free fruit or vegetable snack a week for students in the Plainview, Eads, Kit Carson, and Cheyenne Wells Schools as well as the Haswell, Eads, Towner, and Cheyenne Wells Senior Centers. What a great program and what a marvelous service to people!

The Homecoming Theme is "Mardi Gras" for the week of October 4 through 9th. If groups or individuals want to participate in the parade, they may call the high school or student, Adam Saffer.
