About Town

Hazel Krueger of Eads says she is "80 years old and just loves doing what she loves to do to the best of her ability and that is hand quilting". She was just amazed that after she took five quilts to the Colorado State Fair that every quilt was awarded a blue ribbon. Her Halloween Wall hanging won "Best of Show" over all the holiday entries. Hazel’s five quilts are on display at the State Fair where her daughter, Nancy, has taken a video of the displays so Hazel can see them. One quilt is a mixed technique of nine patched tulips on which she used an appliqué stitches. Another is in the a "Old Tops" category where she took old blocks of a Dresden Plate motif that Dr. Pam Kuhns Valdez gave to her. Another prize winning quilt was a baby quilt she made for her granddaughter and the last winning quilt was of the "Friendship Garden" design which she entered in the senior citizen division. Congratulations, to Eads’ master quilter, Hazel Krueger!

We welcome new teacher Shannon (Barlow) Ellenberger who is our Business Education Educator at Eads High School. A new face to the school campus is Sharon Frazee who is a cook at the cafeteria. We are glad that Bruce Hallman, science and math educator and Bob Seay, music educator who signed on in January have come back to add stability to the staff and curriculum. Respected former English teacher, Judy Bean, has joined the staff to teach College Composition I and II in the Long Distance Lab at EHS and Literature.

Our community welcomes Pastor Dale and Mrs. Juanita Nooks and their daughter, Stephanie who is a junior at EHS to Eads. Pastor Nooks serves the First Baptist Church in Eads. Their family chose to come to a small town and parish from San Antonio, Texas.

Brian James’ photo appeared on my internet screen sporting a huge silver belt buckle and champion ribbon after winning top honors in the timed events at the 4-H Horsemanship Contest at the Colorado State Fair. Some of the events were barrels, roping, and pole bending. Brian is a sophomore at Colorado State University-Fort Collins and a Kiowa County 4-H member. His younger sisters, Alicia and Jessica, competed in the Junior and Senior Division respectively. Fourth grader, Alicia, won fourth overall in her competition.

Administrator, Warren Yule, of the Weisbrod Hospital District was honored along with his family Thursday evening for a wonderful outdoor cook out on the patio. Warren’s wife, Opal, and sons, Ben and Luke were here and daughter, Becky. Ben and Becky are senior education majors at Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Yules are eager to sell their home in Akron so they can permanently move to one of the Eads homes they are considering.

Jennifer Negely, Chevaun Glover and Shalyn Laird, of Eads competed in the 4-H Creative Cooks contest at the Colorado State Fair last Saturday. I marvel at the wonder of cell phones. I was thrilled when their phone call came telling me that my 4-H students had won champion in the Intermediate Division and Champion in the Senior division. Jennifer also won Grand Champion of all the Intermediate teams and individual contestants. Jennifer’s setting and meal was based on a 1970’s summer tea party and Chevaun and Shalyn had a formal Italian meal.

Jessica Watts, 2004 Eads grad, is playing Volleyball with the Lamar Community College team. It will be good to get to see her play volleyball. Jessica is the daughter of Allen Wade and Marie Watts.

Natalie Mitchell will be married to Richard Troyer at the Kit Carson Church of the Redeemed Sunday September 5th. Natalie is an Eads grad. We wish the young couple much happiness.

Congratulations to Shannon Christie and his wife, Paula, who had a baby son, Dakota, August 14th. They live in Cheyenne Wells with their three sons who have welcomed Dakota home. Grandparents, Danny and Lana Christie, have been having fun buying baby equipment and more toys for their grandchildren when they come to visit in their Eads home.

Let’s support our Kiowa County Fair beginning Wednesday, September 8th through Sunday, Sept. 12th. There are many day time and evening events, exhibits, and the big parade. The young man, Jason Allen, is a fine singer from Holly, Colorado. Monica Fell Uhland, for whose wedding he sang, when she married Stacy Uhland, will be opening the show Saturday night at the Fairgrounds. How exciting! We can hear local talent.

So many people really enjoy shopping at the Eads City Park Market on Saturday mornings in Eads. It is a great place to visit friends and for children to have fun playing on the playground equipment.

It is good to read about the Eads golf team and their coach, John Philpy. They are doing well at their meets. This is a good life time sport. I drove out by our Eads Golf Course Monday evening and saw a number of people out playing golf. The greens really do look nice.

Beulah McDaniel Fratus has been in Eads for about a month visiting her son, Richard and Janet. She has a nice trailer near their round house home so she could visit some home folk. Richard and Janet took her back to Yuma, Arizona, where the altitude is better for her health.

Lyle Beeson, of Eads is our "Schwans man" who comes around in the big yellow truck. People surely enjoy having Lyle’s familiar face come to their door. Of course it is true that some people stop him along the streets, but he is congenial about it. The Schwans company has donated large amounts of money to Lutheran colleges for libraries and other buildings and also to Lutheran mission work.

The junior class and their sponsors have been cooking and making lots of burritos and other foods for the Junior concession stands. The first games will be at home on Friday the 3rd with Volleyball at 4:00 p.m. and the Football game at 7:00 p.m.

Elizabeth Lane of Eads was so pleased to have her daughter, Evelyn Shearl, drive up from Dalhart, Texas, last week to spend time with her. Evelyn’s son, Jim Baxter, has lived in Alaska for many years. When he called this week he said they have had a lot of thunder and lightning which he has never experienced before. He says that the weather in his part of Alaska is very, very warm, more like parts of California.

The Tuesday Shop that we find so delightful in Kit Carson is moving their location and will be open three days a week, (Monday Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) at their new site in the former Brick Wall Antique Shop right on the highway and Main Street. However, both shops will be opened this Saturday for the festivities at Kit Carson Day. There are many fun activities planned for Friday and Saturday, September 3rd and 4th. The Barbeque, Parade, Melodrama, games at the school are among some of the fun activities.

September 11th is such a busy day of the Kiowa County Fair for Ida’s birthday, we have decided to have the party at the Nursing Home on Sunday, September 5th at 1:00 p.m. for friends who would like to come for cake and ice cream with the residents and our mother, Ida Lessenden. Then depending on the weather, we may move to the patio or the "pretty room" since the chapel is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
