Make Using Repellent against West Nile Virus a Habit

With human cases of West Nile virus
having been confirmed recently in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and
Wyoming, public health agencies are urging Colorado residents to begin
using insect repellant, containing DEET, on a regular basis to protect
themselves and their families from West Nile virus. Colorado has been
preparing for the reemergence of the virus and wants to strongly remind
residents that this is a preventable illness. Now is the time to take
personal precautions against being bitten by the mosquitoes that carry the
disease.
Last month throughout Kiowa County a
number of mosquito traps were set and the mosquitoes collected were sent
to the state for testing. The mosquitoes did test negative for West Nile
virus, but the mosquitoes were the Culex Tarsalis which do carry the
virus.

Mosquitoes transmit West Nile virus
after they bite infected birds, which are the carriers of the disease.
Mosquitoes then can spread the virus to humans and horses. For many
people, West Nile virus infection is not just an illness, and it can
affect anyone of any age.
People should take preventative
measures now to prevent infection from mosquito bites by wearing proper
clothing, using insect repellent containing DEET and by eliminating
standing water around their property which could become mosquito breeding
areas. For questions or more information on West Nile virus please contact
the Kiowa County Nursing Service at 438-5782.
