Competition Tough at 4-H Contests

Competition was tough at the Kiowa County 4-H Contests held Monday night in Eads. Members showed public speaking skills and skills learned in their projects in the Creative Cooks Contest, Cake Decorating Contest and Demonstration Contest.

Once again, Chevaun Glover and Shalyn Laird won Grand Champion in the Creative Cooks Contest. They were also Champion in the Senior Team division with their Italian meal. Reserve Grand Champion was Jennifer Negley, with a 60's inspired meal and theme. Jennifer was also Champion in the Intermediate division. Milly Spady won Reserve Champion Senior Individual in this contest. Other contestants in the Intermediate division were Cardon Brandt, Reserve Champion, and Tara Spady, blue ribbon winner. Remington Brandt won Reserve Champion in the Junior division.

Milly Spady decorated a beautiful 2 layer cake using flowers made on a lily flower nail and side trim with stringwork in the Cake Decorating Contest. Her efforts won her Grand Champion in this contest.

Are you afraid to speak in front of groups? Carrie Roberson and Milly Spady conquered this fear as part of the Demonstration Contest. Carrie told about her rabbit project in a demonstration titled "Fur, Fancy, Food" and won Grand Champion. Milly's demonstration "Jam Up & Jelly Tight" won Reserve Grand Champion.

All contestants won a blue ribbon, meaning their entries were excellent. Judges for the contest were Donna and Kaylyn Siefkas of LasAnimas. Extension Agents Kaye Kasza and Bruce Fickenscher coordinated the competitions. 4-H and all Cooperative Extension programs are open to all without discrimination.
