About Town
By Ida and Doris Lessenden

Vivian Gifford returned recently
from a flight to her home area in Michigan where she attended the wedding
of her nephew and visited her sister and other dear friends. Vivian
enjoyed the lovely wedding and parties with her family and friends.
Bill and Charlotte Woelk of Eads
went to meet other relatives at Horace, Kansas, for a family reunion last
week with Bill’s three sisters and their families. About 60 relatives came
from Colorado and many states for the reunion.
Martina LeGrand of Eads was
delighted when her daughter, Lois Howard, came for her Saturday. Some of
her family took her to see the movie, "The Passion" and then went on over
the mountains where they had a family reunion with some other family
members.
Thursday evening, LeAnne Bradley RN
arranged a graduation ceremony for the ten young ladies who took the
Certified Nursing Assistant classes at Weisbrod Hospital. Family and
friends were there to congratulate students, Andrea Johnson, Amanda McLoud,
Crystal Martinez, Caitlyn Philpy, Alyssa Hadley, Daniyelle Sheridan,
Karissa Sicklebower, Amber Hossman, Beth Stavely, and Rachel R. Buck.
Many family and friends went to
Denver last Friday night to watch the performance at the 53 National
Square Dance Convention. We mentioned the Eads teenagers names or the
Denim and Lace Dancers last week who danced but didn’t know that alumni
Tim Weeks also danced. He was an outstanding dancer with the Dudes and
Dames years ago.
Since this is the end of June many
of the youth baseball and softball leagues are winding down with
tournaments. Because of the rains some games have had to be re-scheduled.
Isn’t this good news?
June Blooding, and daughter, Mary
Eikner, met her daughter, Mickie Faulkin, from Davis, California, at the
airport in Oklahoma City, so they could go to the Potawatomie Indian Tribe
Pow Wow. Terry, Arêta, and Shalyn Laird met the family at the Pow Wow Site
in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Mickie came back to Colorado with them Sunday and
traveled on up to Denver to spend a few days with her daughter’s family.
Although experts tell us that these
rains we have been having are not going to break the drought, we are glad
to see the prairies greening up. I hear that there is very little wheat
that will be harvested and the water level at the lakes is very, very low.
Rosamond Pollreis was very happy to
have her granddaughter, Kim and Troy Garnhardt come from Colorado Springs
for a visit with their daughters, Abigail, Kennedy, and Kori. The staff
arranged a noon luncheon in the "pretty room" for her family and her son,
Phillip and Madonna, of Wiley.
Thank you, to generous people who
have mailed money donations or have brought gifts to me for our Vacation
Bible School to send in "goodie boxes" to some soldiers in Iraq or
overseas. Some people have asked me what could they bring to my home or
have us buy. These are a few suggestions they gave us: dried foods, beef
jerky, tuna snack kits, matches, crossword puzzle books, playing cards,
toothpaste, tissues, toilet paper, underwear, hand cleansers, writing
paper, pens, hometown papers, magazines, baby wipes, dry drinks like
pre-sweetened powdered drinks, and hard candy, lip balm., sunscreen and
books are valued items. Betsy Evans of Kit Carson and I will be helping
send these items in "Moral Packages" if readers have any questions.
L. G. and Phyllis Vanderwork were
pleased to have Bobbie Lowery of Golden, have lunch with them Monday. She
has been a long time friend of theirs for many years. She is the
coordinator for L.P. Gas in Colorado.

Melissa and Keith Orman of Eagle
Point, Oregon, have been enjoying having meals and visits with family and
friends the last two weeks. They are closing out their home here and will
return to Oregon till next year. Melissa’s father, Gerard Bachand, is
looking forward to moving in to their home on Hickman. There is much more
room in the garage for him to do his artistic intarsia wood work.
Several Eads folk traveled to
Cheyenne Wells for the installation of their new Pastor, Martin Davis, who
will serve at Grace Lutheran and Kit Carson Trinity Lutheran Churches. The
five other pastors were here for the installation and ordination ceremony
and dinner.
Three gentlemen that we know of in
our community have had surgery this week. We are hopeful for their quick
recovery.
I am delighted to have many children
come to our 5-Day Bible Club in my home this week. The teen
missionary-teachers are Christopher Plummer from Holly and Rachel Bachert
from Two Buttes.
4-H members presented
demonstrations, creative cook meals, and participated in cake decorating
at the fairgrounds Monday evening. The participants were Cardon Brandt,
Jennifer Negley, Chevaun Glover, Shalyn Laird, Remington Brandt, Carrie
Roberson, Tara Spady, and Milly Spady, These youth are all members of the
Prairie Queen 4-H Club.
The Artist of the Plains Gallery is
hosting its 7th annual Art in the Park beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Saturday, July 3rd on the Courthouse lawn. It is always such a
lovely sight to see people browsing around the artist’s booths on the
lawn.
People can enjoy a July 4th
pot luck evening meal and fun at Haswell Sunday evening or Fireworks
with games and a barbecue at the fairgrounds in Eads the evening of the 4th.
Best Wishes to Lisa Hester who has
opened the full service HI Plains Salon on Maine Street in Eads. She will
be opened Monday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on
Saturdays from, 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the former Sharon’s Cuts and
Styles Salon. Lisa moved here in May and is a delightful person.
We have surely missed seeing Vernon
(Beetle) and Sharon Koch about town the last couple of months since they
moved to Florida. Our best wishes are with the Kochs in their new
location.
Children, teens, and adults are glad
to have the Town of Eads swimming pool open and staffed by life guards.
The town council and the city workers are to be commended for their
support financially and its good care. Thank you.
Since Doris has been and will be
basically homebound for several weeks to come, she would appreciate having
people call to tell her their news. She really does appreciate the
kindness of her friends and the neighborhood children who stop by and help
run errands for her.
