Letter to the Editor-Hazel Shepherd

I just received my May 14, 2004 copy of the Kiowa County Press.

I was appalled to learn, that the Mayor of Eads, is selling a piece of his property to be developed as a "bar and recreation center." Right near to the Eads School.

I’ll admit, Eads needs an honorable place for teenagers to "hang out," others have recently expressed such a need and desire.

But a bar and recreation center is a place for adults to "hang out," not teenagers.

Our children already have too many temptations to use dope, alcohol and cigarettes. I think it is ridiculous that adults are agreeing to have such a place – so close to the school. There are already enough places to buy and do such in Eads.

I have always been proud to tell people that I’m from Eads, Colorado and attended school there for 10 ½ years. And everyone else, according to the Press, is proud of it, too.

But when school children start coming to school drunk or bringing liquor etc. to school, people are going to complain that the children are "bad kids."

So, please, folks, stop this temptation for the children before it gets out of control, and you are ashamed of your school and it’s pupils.

Aren’t there others, of you, that should speak up against this?
