Wool Pool Collection Dates Set

The Southeast Colorado Woolgrowers Association will host its annual Wool Pool to assist regional sheep growers with the marketing of their yearly wool clip according to Bill Hancock, wool pool coordinator. This year the Wool Pool will be working with Mid-States Wool Growers Cooperative Association of Hutchinson, Kansas to market the wool. Mid-States will grade each individual fleece consigned by a producer and pay for the quality of each fleece.

This method should reward those producers with higher quality fleeces according to Hancock.

The 2004 wool pool collection dates and locations are as follows: Thursday, May 20, 2004, from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Prowers County Fairgrounds, Lamar. The contact person for the Lamar location is Leonard Pruett, (719) 336-7734; and Saturday, May 22, 2004, from 9:00 a.m. -12:00 noon, Bill Hancock Ranch, Rocky Ford. Contact person is Bill Hancock (719) 254-7608.

All wool must be bagged in approved sacks or bales and separated into black face wool, white face wool and lamb wool. The SECWGA will again collect for the wool from Mid-States and make all payments to each participating producer. Marketing charges are the same as past years with a marketing charge of $.03 per pound for SECWGA members and $.05 per pound for non members. Producers are asked to remain at the Rocky Ford location to assist in the loading of wool onto the Mid-States truck.
