As in years past, the Eads Middle
School students entered the Colorado Law Enforcement Officers’
Association’s (CLEOA) annual essay contest.
This organization is solely
dedicated to educational enhancement. They offer scholarships to
graduating seniors and sponsor contests for students to show academic
excellence. This year’s students made a particularly good showing, taking
seven of the twelve prizes given in southern Colorado.
The contest is open to all Colorado
sixth, seventh and eighth graders in order to bring about an early
awareness of some of the issues that plague today’s teens. The sixth grade
essay focused on drugs and alcohol and the effects they have on our
society. The seventh grade wrote about peer pressure, either positive or
negative, and how it affects their lives.

The eighth graders wrote their
essays on violence and gangs and how our society deals with such issues.
In the eighth grade division Drew Koch took second place, winning $75 for
his essay, and Daniela Salinas took third place, winning $50. In the
seventh grade division Allison Buck took first place, winning $100, Lisa
Miller took second, winning $75, and Tyler Fox took third, winning $50.
In the sixth grade division Austin
Adamson took second place, winning $75, and Jennifer Negley took third
place, winning $50. Gary Oyen of the Bent County Sheriff’s Office came
with our local sheriff, Forrest Frazee, to award checks and certificates
to the students on May 6, 2004. All students are to be commended on their
hard work, and congratulations to the winners.
