NRCS Celebrates and Promotes National Agriculture Day
March 26, 2004
Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) joined other government agencies, agricultural
associations, producers and many others across America in celebrating and
promoting National Agriculture Day on March 20, 2004.
Ag Day is about recognizing the
contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives and encourages every
American to value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a
strong economy. Few people truly understand that agriculture provides
almost everything we eat, use, and wear on a daily basis. This celebration
aims to build awareness and promote agriculture in schools, communities,
organizations.
Here are a few reasons to celebrate
agriculture: •Agriculture is America’s #1 export. •Agriculture is a $4.4
billion industry in Colorado. Every hour, the U.S. exports $6 million
worth of agricultural products. •Each American farmer feeds at least 120
people per day. •Farmers and ranchers provide food, fiber, and
environmental benefits year-round. •The conservation provisions within the
2002 Farm Bill markets the single largest financial commitment to private
working lands in history. •New technology means farmers are more
environmentally friendly than ever before. •Farmers work daily to reduce
erosion, guard streams and rivers, restore and establish fish and wildlife
habitat, and improve water and air quality. •Just as urban families
recycle grass, newspaper and aluminum, farm families have practiced
recycling for a long time by applying manure to fields to replace
nutrients in the soil. •Agricultural land provides habitat for 75% of the
nation’s wildlife.

Increased knowledge of agriculture
and nutrition allows individuals to make informed personal choices about
diet and health. NRCS encourages Americans to recognize the role of
agriculture and celebrate it, by showing gratitude to the many men and
women who make agriculture possible.
NRCS provides leadership in a
partnership effort to help conserve, maintain, and improve our natural
resources and environment.
