About Town
By Ida and Doris Lessenden
March 26, 2004
Lillie Fox is glad to have her
daughter, Madonna, here from Wyoming for a visit. They were among the many
folks who went to the Sing-a-Long service and the soup supper Sunday
evening.
The six Durrett sisters are here
from several states. They are sorting and saving and ready to offer a huge
garage sale of items at their mother, Arla’s home Friday and Saturday,
March 26 and 27th.
Delores Rector, LaVerle Kelley,
Annie Cole, Faye Barber, and Doris Lessenden went to the AAA, Council on
the Area of Aging Agency meeting in Las Animas. They met with delegates
from a six counties on a number of issues. The ladies have some valuable
fact sheets to share with the public. Copies will be available at the Eads
Senior Center and the Haswell Senior Center. The informative topics
covered are: managing health and medical bills, giving to charities,
making wise investment decisions, planning for increased dependency (with
aging) and a list of resource offices and phone numbers to prevent and
report senior fraud. We are learning that there is so much to learn to
help protect us as we grow older. We just need to ask and in some cases
state are concerns or our needs to the correct service people or leaders.
Emily Oswald Coffey was arranging
her antiques in the Kit Carson Shepp’s Inn Friday when we were there. It
was so good to see one of my student friends from the 60’s era. Emily has
many articles like dishes, frames, books, toys and other treasurers that
she brings down from Denver once a month.
Cardon and Joyce Berry flew to
California to visit her sister, Norma and husband, Floyd Harrison. While
they were there several of Joyce’s cousins and two aunts and an uncle came
to visit. The Berrys drove a car and trailer back to Colorado for the
Harrisons so it will be here when they return to Greeley.
April and Brandy Turcott, Kelcie
Smith, and Dally Lessenden, 4-H members, went to the Nursing Home last
Tuesday to do some mending and sewed on buttons as part of their 4-H
projects. Their mothers took them over to help supervise their community
service.
Shirley Britt, daughter of Mildred
and Larry Michael’s sister is here this week from Norfolk, Virginia.
Shirley has been helping clean out her mother’s home at the Village.
Shirley and Billy Jean Buchannan were among those who went to the
Sing-a-Long concert.
There was a big turn out of people
who came to the Sing-a-Long at the Methodist Church Sunday evening. This
county event featured special solos, duets, and a choir from the churches
Assembly of God, Baptist, First Christian, Sheridan Lake, and United
Methodist. Soloists were Barbara Gitchel, Wendy Lott, Alvin and Margaret
Clamp. Six youth: Jennifer and Jayce Negley, Leisha Peck, Alicia James,
Marisa Dixon, and Shalyn Laird sang entertaining songs. The Women’s
Sextet: Gail Voss, Sandy Jones, Pam Crow, Lynn Puls, Arêta Laird, and
Dianna Billheimer sang specials and led songs as introduced by the MC’s,
Mary Eikner and Tom Davis. Gary Liesen played the banjo and Pastor Goettel
played the guitar with some of the hymns. Their instruments added to the
already marvelous, uplifting music played by Philomene Liesen and Jimmy
Brown on the piano and organ. Oh, it was also wonderful to look at the
words to the hymns on the screen to sing without holding a heavy book. Tom
and Kim Richards served as greeters and of course, Nancy Walker was on
hand to tend to all the technical details. What a spiritually uplifting
evening of worship and prayer that Philomene Liesen planned for us again.
Philomene will never, never know what a true blessing she has been to so
many people through the years!!
Steve Puls flew to California last
week to drive with his daughter, Sarah, who was to drive from Monterey to
her new station at the San Antonio, Texas Air Force Base.
Kevin Dawson, Kit Carson potter, has
made 100 bowls which will be given to the first 100 people who attend the
Artists of the Plains chili supper Friday April 2nd. There will
also be a silent auction of artists’ works at the community building.
The Eads Drama club will have their
performance at 7:00 p.m. at the Crow-Luther Arts Center Thursday and
Friday, March 25 and 26th. There was so much acclaim about the
fall production this is surely a performance you will want to see. It is
so heart warming to see the talents of our students displayed.

Trinity Lutheran LWML and the
Eastern High Plains Thrivent group will be hosting a pot luck soup supper
and movie: "The Gospel According to John" at the Kit Carson Senior Center
on Wednesday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. A free will offering will be taken for
medical and funeral expenses for the Rob and Lori Morlan family who lost
their daughter in an auto accident. These funds will be matched by the
Thrivent financial group.
Bill and Charlotte Woelk are
thrilled to have a new grandson, William Hayden, who was born on March 17th
to Billy and Courtney Woelk in Colorado Springs.
Rosamond Pollreis was pleased to
have her son and daughter-in-law from Wiley come over the weekend as well
as her grandchildren and great grandchildren from the Denver area to visit
her in Eads and to work at her Kit Carson home.
The Eads senior citizens had a noon
meal on St. Patrick’s Day at the center which was followed by some card
playing. That evening Mona Walker and her fine Weisbrod Dietary Staff and
the nurses served a traditional Irish meal of corned beef, creamed
potatoes, parsnips, other vegetables and a pie dessert bar. Some auxiliary
ladies also distributed green hats and green feather boas to the
residents.
Brighton Derby and Justin Krueger
assisted Rhonda Krueger for the horseshoe playing at the Nursing Home
Saturday. The residents surely do like to see young people there. Brighton
is Rhonda’s middle school nephew from Rangely, and Justin is her three
year old son.
Milton, T. J., and Trice Watts were
in Torrington, Wyoming to compete in team roping events over the weekend.
Friends of Dick and Sue Ramsay are
thrilled that they have moved to Lamar from Arizona. Someone asked Sue at
the Sing-a-Long, "Why would you move back here?" Sue laughed and replied,
"I miss the people and my grandchildren."
LaVerle Kelley and Loretta Seibel
have returned from a vacation in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their friends are glad
to have them back.
Alice Glover and her sister, Mary
Hood, returned from several weeks in Arizona. Alice said they had such a
good time with friends. She and Wayne used to enjoy this so much.
Tonya Wood of Kit Carson recently
was trying to locate a home for an 18 year old girl from China till the
end of May who came to the USA March 10th. The young lady is
glad that Braden and Violet Lane and family have welcomed her into their
home near Plainview where she goes to school.
The first high school track meet
will be this Saturday, March 27 in Lamar and the Junior Olympic Wrestling
matches will be hosted here in Eads. The first baseball game will be at
the Eads field with Wiley beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30. The
Belle Bonfils staff will be here on Tuesday also from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in
the school multi-purpose room to take blood donations.
