The Eads Lady Eagles earned their
third straight regional berth after District 2 competition at the Lamar
Community Building last weekend. Eads ended Kit Carson’s season, 53-40, in
the semifinals to qualify for the Regional tournament on Friday night. The
girls will enter the Regional tournament as District Twos second-seed
after losing in the district championships, 55-35, to McClave. Eads will
take on Pritchett at 6:30 at the La Junta High School gymnasium with the
winner of the contest qualifying for the state tournament next weekend.
Senior Jessica Watts has led Eads
all season and the do-or-die semifinal game with Kit Carson was no
exception as Watts went somewhat out of her role as a post player and hit
three triples in as many possessions late in the first quarter to pace
Eads early. Watts and the Eagles would lead the contest 18-11 after one.
However, the second was not a good one for Eads as the Wildcats outscored
them by double, 10-5, behind balanced scoring from the KC starters. Watts
went stone cold missing four-out-of four free throws and the only
production came from point guard Alyssa Hadley’s lone triple and a gutsy
bucket by Braylynn Peck. By halftime it was a ball game with Eads holding
on to a slight 23-21 lead. The third quarter was concerning for Eads as
Kit Carson would not go away. With Eads attacking with a balanced
inside-outside attack the Cats would not back down managing unusual
long-ball shooting with junior Casey Connelley nailing a triple and Sarah
Wolff hitting for two more. After three the margin had not changed as both
teams stayed even. Eads led going into one of the team’s last quarter of
the year, 34-32. Early in the final stanza Wolff hit her third three of
the contest and it looked bad for Eads. But it would be the Eagles Morrell
Koch stepping up to hit two confident triples and the play of Hadley that
pulled Eads away outscoring the Cats 19-8 and advancing into the District
championship and the right to play another day.
Watts led all scorers with 16 points
despite going 3-for-10 from the charity line. She would earn a
double-double in the contest pulling down 10 boards. Hadley would add 12
points and four steals while Koch added eight more points and nine boards.
Sarah Wolff led the Cats with 11 points followed by sister Michele with
eight in the losing effort.
