Plainview Announces First Semester Buteo Winners
February 27, 2004
Every semester the faculty at
Plainview selects a Buteo winner from the elementary, junior high, and
high school grades. The Buteo, or Soaring Hawk Award, winners exemplify
that Plainview spirit and determination. We congratulate Zach Splitter,
Shelby Harris and Jamie Crowell.
Zach Splitter - Elementary
By Susan Greenfield
Zach Splitter, son of David and
Dennill Splitter, is an interesting kid to have in class. He is very
caring and really strives to do well in all that he tries. He is a
conscientious student who observes everything with an open mind and an
eagerness to try to new things. He is very helpful whether it's assisting
another student with a question or helping out one of his teachers, a
trait he's developed from being the oldest of five kids. Zach has a heart
of gold, but at times he's all boy.
Shelby Harris – Junior High
By Ruth Fees
Shelby Harris, daughter of Rick and
Kim Harris, is a sixth grader at Plainview Junior High. Shelby is an
extremely active young lady, who is involved in many school,
extracurricular, and community/church activities.
This school year Shelby played
volleyball and basketball. In these sports she is a valuable player and
knows the importance of working together as a team. She is also a
cheerleader and has cheered for the high school girls' volleyball and
basketball teams as well as cheering for the junior high boys' basketball
team. While working on a cheer or a routine, Shelby shows patience in
teaching the various moves to the other girls.

School work is important to Shelby,
and she does well in all of her classes. She is also courteous and helpful
to her fellow classmates. After school Shelby participates in 4-H
activities and Awanas. In 4-H she has been involved in such projects as
tie-dye, decorate your duds, and sewing. In Awanas she is a part of Guards
for fifth and sixth grade girls, where she studies the Bible, learning
verses and researching more about her Christian faith.
I would describe Shelby Harris as
"little spit fire." She may be small, but she has "king-size" heart and
the energy and caring to go with it. She is always pleasant to others, no
matter if they are adults or students. She exhibits good sportsmanship and
courtesy in everything she does. I really enjoy working with Shelby and am
looking forward to having her in my English classes next year.
Jamie Crowell – High School
By Ruth Fees
Jamie Crowell, daughter of Julie and
Mike Benge and Jenny and John Crowell, is a senior at Plainview High
School. Jamie is an extremely self-motivated and determined young lady.
Besides being involved in school activities, she has participated in
numerous extra-curricular and community activities. In addtition to being
the president of her senior class, she is also the vice-president of
student council. As an officer of student council, Jamie has organized
activities for Homecoming week, welcomed the senior citizens at the
Thanksgiving meal held at the school, and sent the local "seniors"
Valentines. As a president of the senior class, she makes sure that things
run smoothly, whether it's making signs or baking "goodies" to be raffled
off. Jamie is a member of National Honor Society; this year she helped
organize a food drive. The food was sent to the Ronald MacDonald House and
to families in the community.
At school Jamie carries a heavy
course load; she isn't afraid to work She even takes her college
literature course independently so that she can help with the yearbook and
newspaper. As editor and reporter for the Hawk Herald, she writes and
types articles so that we can make our once-a-month deadline. I am very
thankful that I have Jamie to help me with the paper, I know that I
couldn't do the paper by myself. Jamie is also a valuable member of the
Matchwits and Knowledge Bowl teams. Jamie has been involved in athletics,
playing volleyball her freshmen through senior year as well as playing
basketball her junior year. Jamie is a team player in every sense of the
word. She works hard to improve her skills and gives 100% in the game and
in practice, in spite of injury. After school, Jamie helps the school's
custodian clean the school. She works hard and takes pride in what she
does not matter what it is. She also helps to keep the town of Sheridan
Lake beautiful by taking care of the park and doing any mowing
