About Town

Becky Puls came to Eads from Dallas, Texas where she is attending Criswell Bible College and Sarah Puls flew here from California to meet the family where she is in the Air Force. Steve, Lynn, and their daughters, Becky, Sarah, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Trinity left in the family car and Sarah’s car for Monterey, California, where Sarah is stationed at the military linguistics school. The Puls family visited relatives in Colorado, Nevada, and California.

We received a beautiful letter with wonderful photos from Burl and Cathy Scherler of Sheridan Lake. We always like to hear about their travels which this year took them to China, snow mobiling in Yellowstone, Canada, a Caribbean Cruise with their family and Texas to see their daughter, Christi in College Station, and Lynn’s family, Keri, and little Addison in Lubbock. What a great family.

Janie Bush was home alone at their Chivington ranch home last Thursday when she discovered a prairie fire coming toward their home. She was so grateful for all the neighbors who came with water hoses and for the fire fighters who came for several hours from departments in Eads, Wiley, Kit Carson, Cheyenne Wells, Lamar, and Granada. Joe, Janie, and Joe Andrew are so thankful to all the volunteers and friends who came to save their home and corrals even though many acres were lost to the fire.

Wallace Crabill of Eads passed away January 7th. We extend our sympathy to his nieces and nephews. Wallace was 90 years old. When he was able he liked to drive around to other towns or go to farm auctions

Eads Knowledge Bowl team members and sponsors, Sue Fox and Carole Spady went to the Las Animas Knowledge Bowl last week. This Friday the public who would like to watch the matches at the Eads Invitational Meet can view them in the Eads High School classrooms after about 9:30 a.m. to about 12:45 p.m.

Sandra Jones, art teacher at EHS who is assisted by Montee Tinnes had the high school art student’s work on displays in the Multi Purpose Room during the Friday basketball game. There were some fine paintings, drawings, beautiful designs in colored glass tiles, and scratch board designs. We are so very grateful to Sandy and to her employer, Roger of the Saffer Spraying Service to allow their receptionist time off to teach an art class at Eads High. Middle School students are excited for the chance to take arts and crafts in Lane Gooden’s classroom this semester.

Kevin McNamara called Bruce Laird from Hawaii last week to say that he will be leaving for Iraq January 19th. He would like to get mail at: A-2/11 FA, APO AE 09347-9998

I was pleased to hear that my daughter, Virgyln Griswold, was the Honored Senior Citizen at the McClave game. Mary (Adamson) Vasquez’ English students prepare the biographies which are read at the ballgames. This week the presentation was by sophomore, Tasha Hueller.

Bill and Dorie Musgrave are happy to have a new grandson, Atlee Ethan, born to Trace and Cathy Musgrave last week. This is their first child so it is a joyful time for them. They live near Wellington, so Atlee’s grandparents are eager drive up north to see this little one soon.

Congratulations to Nick and Darci (Weeks) Johnson of Wild Horse-Eads on the birth of their son, Taite Aaron, December 31st.

Congratulations to the happy young couple, Alison (Davis) and Chad Penner whose family hosted a reception at the Haswell Community Center to celebrate their marriage. The Penner’s live in La Junta where Alison works at State Bank of La Junta and Chad works for the Lewis Nuts and Bolts Company.

Chris and Erin (Kirby) Lindholm of Trinidad are thrilled at the birth of their first child. They named him, Kenneth Kyle. The happy grandparents at Eads are Ken and Elaine Lindholm and great grandmothers, are Marina LeGrand and Eunice Lindholm.

One of the best things about going to the basketball game at Eads Friday was to see Judy Bean selling admission tickets. I asked her if she had baby photos of her new grandson and she did! Well, after teaching students for many years and enjoying them so much, it is great that she and Verle can dote on their own grandchild. Judy and Carole Spady the other admission clerk were selling cute purple and gold "beanie baby" eagles for the Eads Education Association Future Teacher’s Scholarship. Remember that donations to the scholarship are always welcome.

The basketball games were fun and exciting last weekend. Especially the boy’s varsity overtime game when they won over McClave, and the boy’s junior varsity in Sugar City where they won in overtime, and the boys and girls junior and senior varsity when they won over the Crowley Chargers.

Sandy Jones flew to Tennessee to visit her daughter, Lori, and husband, Wayne Robertson, and grandchildren, Jeramy and Brittany. She had a wonderful time at their farm and enjoying the sights with her family there.

Assembly of God parishioners were happy to have a soup supper Monday evening so they could visit with their former pastor, Gary Foshee and wife, Julie, and sons, Aspen and Gabe.

Some Eads folk went to the Lamar United Methodist Church Saturday night where they heard the former Eads-Wiley Pastor, Brian Riecke and his band play in a concert. The band consisted of four men and a lady. Brian is the Colorado District Youth Minister and has left fond and grateful memories with many people in this community.

One of the biggest delights of Doris’s week was a long telephone visit with Julie (Bertha) King, one of her former students during the 60’s. Julie started her college education later in life and has gained her Batchelor and Masters Degree from Colorado Christian College. One of Julie’s classmates, Sandra (Weber) Childs sent a wonderful news release via e-mail about Etheldean Bell who was a beloved English teacher to many Eads students in the early 60’s. The Fort Morgan newspaper had a lengthy photo article with quotes by Mrs. Bell and about her colorful life. She is 96 years old and is still active as a museum volunteer and lives in her home alone. Doris has been sharing the copy with people about town. Lucille Crow says one of her best memories is that Etheldean taught a number of ladies about town to play bridge.

Farmers and ranchers and friends of the Don Ullom family will be sad to know that Don passed away. His services were in Wiley this week. He and his family have operated the large Ullom Wiley Oliver Machinery Sales on Highway 287 and 50 for many years.
