Meetings, Workshops, Symposiums, Scheduled

Early winter seems to be the time that everybody plans agricultural producer meetings. I guess they figure there is little else to do. Here is a list of things to do, if your household list is depleting, or excuses that can be used to ------ increase the planning phase.

The first 2004 event will be the annual meeting and elections of the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee and the Colorado Association of Wheat Growers. For Kiowa County, the meeting will be at Our Place Restaurant in Eads on January 6 at 7:30 a.m. A complimentary breakfast will be served.

AgrAbility: Use of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and Client Assistance Programs to Keep Farmers/Ranchers with Disabilities in Agriculture, how is that for a title? This is for professional who work with individuals and families in agriculture and will be at the CSU Extension Office in Rocky Ford on January 21 beginning at 12:00 noon. There is no registration fee, but pre-registration is required one week prior to the date. If fewer than 5 people register the event may be cancelled.

On January 28 the Plainsman Research Center in Walsh will have its Advisory Council Annual meeting. Advisory Council members will be individually contacted, but other producers are welcome to attend. The Cow Palace Inn in Lamar will be the location, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and rolls. Overviews and discussions of research projects at the center and throughout Southeast Colorado will be given. Lunch will be provided.

Whew! Now we start on February. Norm Dalsted, and company, will be in Lamar on February 9. Dr. Dalsted will again be discussing Estate planning strategies with time allowed for individualized discussion. Those who attended Dr. Dalsted’s workshop last fall are especially encouraged to attend. Exact times and locations are yet to be announced.

January 23rd is the deadline to register for the "Niche Beef Production and Marketing Workshops". The workshops will be held February 19 and 20 at the Sheraton Hotel in Colorado Springs. Topics will cover business planning, production and marketing. Cost for the workshop is $75 to cover the cost of workbooks, meals, and a field trip. Registration forms may be picked up at the Kiowa County Extension Office or by visiting the website at: http://dare.agsci.colostate.edu/aftnichebeef/

Finally, on February 23, Wray will be the site of the Ogallala Aquifer Symposium. Topics will include Water Conservation Programs, Water Litigation Updates, Water Supply Updates and Water Savings. These topics definitely affect Kiowa County as the irrigators are finding out the affects of past litigation on their use of irrigation water. The cost of this symposium is $15 per person or $25 for two if it is sent in before February 2. The fees will cover lunch, breaks, and handouts. Again, registration forms and information is available at the Kiowa County Extension Office.
