About Town
By Ida and Doris Lessenden
November 14, 2003
Calvin and Florence (Buck) Colvalt
of Louisiana were here recently visiting friends of his mother, Mary
Shade, in the Weisbrod Nursing home and visiting their family about town
and his sister, Cleta Englehardt and family of Haswell.
Happy Birthday to Theo Kirshmann who
was honored on his birthday with a party at the Nursing Home. Verna
Ebright came to be with her former neighbor and to help host the party. I
have noticed that many of the birthday cakes we have at the home are baked
and decorated by Fran Larrew. She is an excellent baker.
Congratulations to Brandi Roberson,
Millicent Spady, Kirby Stum and Dally Jo Lessenden who were honored to
receive Outstanding 4-H Award Plaques for the senior and junior 4-H
members of the county at the 4-H Banquet Friday.
A Memorial Service was held at
Castle Rock for Terri, Gary Forrest’s wife on Friday with her burial at
Sedalia. They have two grown sons and were planning to have their extended
family at their new home that is being built at Estes Park, for Christmas.
Unfortunately Terri’s life was taken within six weeks of her diagnosis of
cancer. Gary’s mother, Margery Mills, lives with her son, Eddie, in
Thornton. Gary’s uncle, John and Verna Ebright, of Eads went up to the
services.
Sunday afternoon we were favored to
have Pastor Steve Puls of the Baptist Church come to lead the chapel
services. He encouraged us to continue to fight the good fight of living
our life to the fullest here at Weisbrod.
Congratulations to Tyler Frazee who
was married to Cheryl Beth White in Oklahoma City Saturday November 8th.
Tyler’s grandfather, is Merle Frazee of south of Galatea who went down for
the wedding and festivities. Tyler’s parents are Larry and Arnitha Frazee
formerly of Eads.
We have been having some fun (and
being a little messy maybe) during painting sessions at the Home. Tanya
Lane really has a knack at helping us with wooden pieces, paints, and
glitter. Some of our items will be sold at the Hospital Auxiliary Bazaar
on November 22.
Bonnie Lessenden had a birthday
Saturday and was honored with a 25 year pin and a large pretty tropical
plant for her 25 years as a 4-H Leader. I know that she has dedicated a
lot of time and planning in helping and sponsoring youth.
Some members of the Artist of the
Plains Gallery won high honors at the Southeast Colorado Art Guild Show
recently: Some of the awards were "Area Award", an Eads Maine Street scene
by Lill Penn, "Popular Choice" and "Best of Show" a cowboy scene of
peeling spuds by a chuck wagon by Kim Barlow, "Best of Show in Acrylics"
by Deborah Immer, Terry Laird won two awards in Jewelry making and
Pro-Mixed Media, and Sculpture awards were captured by Gerard Bachand and
new member, Kevin Dawson of Kit Carson. The Gallery is opened six days a
week for Christmas shopping. Also at 10 a.m. on November 18th
there will be a meeting at the Art Gallery from the coalition counties,
Baca, Bent, and Kiowa on how to promote "tourism" in our region. Again,
the public is invited.
Another important date is November
18th when delegates from most all the cities and towns in a six
county area are invited to the Eads Senior Citizens at l:00 p.m. for the
Area on Agency on Aging. The public is invited to this meeting to learn
about the latest news on legislation, allocation of funds, and other
business of the agency.
Cheri Williams formerly of Eads
stopped by to visit Sunday evening. She is teaching Art at a Lutheran
School in Colorado Springs and working at the Chapel Hills Mervyn’s store.
