Obituary - Dorothy A. Fick-Cox, 83

Dorothy A. Fick-Cox was born at Boyero, on December 18, 1919 to Theo and Agnes Fick. Dorothy departed this life October 11, 2003, she will be missed very much. In 1921 they moved to Kit Carson. Dorothy went to school in Kit Carson and graduated in 1938. She went on to college at the University of Northern Colorado where she received her first teaching certificate. She taught in Arapahoe her first year and then decided to go to the Barnes Business School in Denver.

After this she then taught business at Kit Carson for 3 years. She married Gerald Cox in 1949 and they lived on a ranch east of Kit Carson until she went to Ignacio, to teach. At this time she moved to the Durango area. She taught at Ignacio for 30 years at which time she retired.

Her husband Gerald passed away in Durango several years later and Dorothy moved back to Kit Carson to take care of her mother, Agnes, until her passing in May of 2002.

Dorothy had a masters degree in elementary education, English literature, and art. She loved to paint and write poetry. Poetry was her greatest accomplishment as she had two books published. Her latest book was published in August of 2003. Her first book was Orange Blossoms on the Sage and the later was Sunshine and Shadows. Several of her poems have been published in papers across the state including The Range Ledger, The Durango Herald, and The Denver Post. She also had one read at the Conference of International Poets annual banquet.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Gerald Cox, her mother Agnes Fick, her father Theo G. Fick, her brother George Fick, her brother-in-law Joe Dechant, and one nephew Chris Dechant.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Louise Dechant; seven nephews and their wives and families: Joseph and Marie Dechant and Gregory; John and Lidia Dechant along with John's son James and his family; Ed and Mary Dechant; Pat and Lannie Dechant and their children Alex and Patrick; Paul and Eleanor Dechant and their sons Jason and Damon; Jim and Lesa Dechant and their children A.J and Jamie; Dan and Joy Dechant, their children Bradley, Tim and Cassie; Dianna Dechant and her sons Jared and Evan; and one niece and husband Mary Jo and Loren Fletcher.

She is also survived by her foster son and wife Willard and Glenda Price and their sons and families and daughter Willandra, and by her many friends and family.

A Tuesday evening prayer service was October 14, 2003. Funeral mass was held Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kit Carson, with Father Khahn officiating. Musicians were Marilyn Ward and Tim Hogan with Doris Lessenden as vocalist. Musical selections included "Amazing Grace", "Be Not Afraid, Come to Her Aid", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Peace is Flowing like a River".

Casketbearers were Dorothy's nephews. Her final resting place was the Kit Carson Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Kit Carson Ambulance Service. Arrangements were handled by Brown Funeral Home.
