About Town

Bill and Patty (Watts) Jackson have been here visiting her mother, Lamira Watts.

Lamira had her 95th birthday recently and still lives by herself at the west edge of Eads. Her daughter and husband live in Anna, Illinois.

Tuesday was a happy day for the Weisbrod residents because our "Adopted Grandchildren" came from the Eads third grade with their teacher, Charlene Gifford. We watched them weave orange and black paper strips to make large pumpkins which they hung in our rooms. The children were delighted to receive pumpkin necklaces that contained bubble blowing fluid.

Marsha (Koch) Butkovich of Pueblo was in Eads over the weekend to visit her friends, Roy and Alma Roberson and family, her grandmother, Ruth Koch, parents, Pete and Phyllis, and other relatives and friends about town.

Sunday residents at Weisbrod were pleased to have children, Bailey King, Melanie and Cameron Martin, Shaeylnn McCracken, Megan Buck, Winston Lott, Kailey and Kallyn Lane, come to sing songs with sign language for the Chapel Service.

They were accompanied by Pastor and Mrs. Lott, Kathy Shade, and Walt Immer. The children sing these songs at King’s Kids. It is always a treat to see young people at the home.

Bob and Rene’ Woods and his brother, Jerry and Rhonda Woods of Englewood, spent a week in Branson, Missouri seeing the sites and shows.

Bill and Shirley Krum are pleased to have their son, William Krum, move to Kiowa County to take up ranching. William recently retired from the Navy where he has been a dental technician and served for 20 years. After living in Okinawa, Japan, Australia, Thailand, Russia, Bali, and other places, William has decided to live on the Eldridge ranch southwest of Eads and raise cattle. Welcome to the community William.

The first practice for the annual Community Christmas Cantata will be November 16th from 2-4 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with the concert on December 14 at 7:00 p.m. People are invited to come to the practices and to plan to wear western attire for the Cantata. There will be a Children’s Choir so please call Cheryl Wyatt if your child wants to sing.

Margaret Mays was glad to have her children, Roberta, Ramona, and Ramond here for her birthday party at Weisbrod Saturday afternoon. Her granddaughter, Tanya Lane arranged the party and served the punch, and lovely cake with help of the staff and her daughters, Kailey and Kallyn. Several of her former neighbors and relatives also came to visit.

There were even more vehicles around the hospital three days of last week while people went to the Kiowa County Nurses offices where Renay Seifried and Sherry Emmert administered flu shots.

Martina LeGrand can often be seen walking around town in the mornings and evenings, but now I know that she usually also walks through the halls of Weisbrod to greet the people, shake their hands, and give them a warm hug. My, how I do appreciate seeing her. She also visits and helps some friends in Unity Village.

Eads FFA members drove to Kentucky, last week for the National Convention. The delegates were Ashley Brown, Hollie Watson, A. J. McCracken, Vance Cole, Kelly Lindholm, Josh Fry, Rachel Brown, Adrianne Adamson, Tasha Hueller, Jace Roberson, Joe Andrew Bush, Shawn Kraft, and Adam Saffer. They were sponsored by Janie Bush and Lance Jagers. The Eads students toured Churchill Downs, the St. Louis Missouri Arch, Indianapolis Speedway, attended many educational workshops and had a great time. Families, Mike and Delisa Weeks, Gary and Kristie Borns, and Jerry and Pam Weirich and Gilbert and Kay Brown drove to be in Louisville Saturday to witness the ceremony honoring Skyler Weeks, Jessica Borns, and Jason Weirich who were conferred with the American Farmer Degree. These former FFA members graduated in 2002 and have been working with their enterprises. Congratulations to our outstanding youth leaders.

Congratulations to Larry and Lois Ann Kelly on their 50th Wedding Anniversary which they celebrated in Scottsdale, Arizona, with their family and friends. The Kelly’s were married in Towner, and were farmers at the east end of the county for years.

Bill and Charlotte Woelk went to the Air Force Academy Football game Saturday with Don and Shirley Synder. On Sunday Charlotte’s sister, Shirley and Don, had a birthday dinner for her with all the Woelk’s children and grandchildren and of course topped with cake and ice cream.

There were a number of costumed children who visited the Senior Citizens Center Friday night where the seniors had supper and had several tables of pitch and bridge players. Some of these children also came up to the Nursing Home and we had treats for them too. Reports are that there were not nearly as many "trick or treaters" out and about Friday night. However, many youth did have a great time at the "Alleluia Party" hosted by the Assembly of God Church leaders.

LaVerne and Ilene Eder and Faye Barber attended the birthday party for Margery (Root) Osborne at the Lamar Senior Center Sunday afternoon. The family had a dinner before the reception. Margery, who is the sister of Pearl Hainer, lived much of her life around Chivington and Sheridan Lake.

Doris brought a number of photos of high school students helping grade children write the "wish lists" at the Eads Book Fair. They were having a good time and I’m wondering if those children think they are going to get all those books and gifts. But Mrs. Barnett and Mrs. Watson did warn them that their parents "Might" buy them a book.

Some of the photos showed students working in groups to study questions for Knowledge Bowl meets. Their Bowl this week is at Lamar Community College. There are so many students in the club that Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Spady have to arrange for students to take turns in attending meets.

Cindy and Dean Perry have the most delightful gift and coffee shop opened on Tuesdays in Kit Carson next to the Post Office. Last Tuesday many people from the community came in to celebrate their first anniversary. In the morning they could play bingo and after 4 p.m. Tim Hogan entertained with his guitar and singing. Every week a number of ladies bake cookies, doughnuts, cakes, candies, and other goodies of which customers can buy a piece or a whole batch to eat with their coffee and chat with neighbors. It is a truly lovely hospitable place with many fine quality gifts to buy, some of which are handcrafted.

The people who rode the county bus to an appointment last Monday at the Lamar Medical Center were certainly happy to see Calvin and Gloria Gaynor when the wheelchair ramp was not working and Calvin helped them. Calvin and his daughter work at the hospital and were returning from lunch.

Charles and Sis Howard attended the "Conversations in Grace" Conference with over 800 other Lutherans over the weekend in Denver. Afterwards they visited friends in Loveland where they lived for awhile.

Families and friends of residents of the Nursing Home need to call in their meal reservations to Rhonda Krueger or Pam Batterton soon for the Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday, November 16th.
