The Eads ladies of the Progressive
FCE (Family Communication, Education) club hosted the District 7 annual
Achievement Day at the Kiowa County Community Building October 2. Members
from Baca, Bent, Otero, Lincoln, and Kiowa Counties registered with Ruth
Wissel for lunch and many door prizes. Louise (Sis) Howard served warm
beverages and a variety of nut and fruit breads before the morning meeting
and morning snacks. Zelda Peterson played the piano while Doris Lessenden
led the ladies in singing "God Bless America" and "America".
The ladies sat around ivory and
green linen cloth tables decorated with little pumpkins and cloth pumpkins
and leaves which Sis had cut out carefully and painted them with a
fixative to be worn or adorn the table clothes. Sis also decorated the
rest of the room with autumn pumpkins and potted sunflowers. Maxine Mays,
President of the Progressive Club, welcomed the ladies for the annual
meetings. Margie Wiltfang of Kiowa County who is the District 7
coordinator chaired the meeting. District secretary Sharon Marcum of Bent
County gave the Secretary’s report and Lula Cole of Baca County gave the
Treasurer’s report. State President Pat Leonard Hill of Karval gave state
and national reports. Ruth Wissel and Louise Howard distributed the lovely
gift wrapped door prizes which brought a lot of enjoyment to the
recipients. The officers will remain the same in addition to Doris
Lessenden who will be available to help the officers if the need arises.

Fran Larrew catered a lovely dinner
of chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, corn, hot rolls and salad with a
wonderful apple dessert. Kaye Kasza brought lovely fall table wares and
napkins for the dinner. Our guests were Otero and Baca County agent, Jean
Justice, Fremont County agent, Gale Miller, and her daughter, Pegi Hueller
of Eads, Pam Weirich, Kiowa Extension Agent’s Secretary and Bruce
Fickenscher, and Kaye Kasza who are extension agents for Kiowa and Bent
Counties.
During the afternoon program Bruce
Fickenscher presented a fine power point slide show of the progress of
their straw-bale house which has been built near Brandon, in our county.
It was a remarkable show of the progress throughout the building process.
We felt quite privileged to see their home and learn educational details
of building such a unique home. After the program, Lula Cole presented a
memorial for a deceased member from Baca County. Lula took a 50 year FCE
pin to Lula A. Woods and her family of Springfield . The ladies will look
forward to the annual meeting in Baca County next year
