About Town

Adam Saffer, Sanket Merchant, Morrell Koch, and Shawn Kraft were the Eads High School delegates who accompanied Student Council Advisor, Dorie Musgrave, to the Annual State STUCO fall conference on the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see a university campus in action as well as to learn more leadership skills.

Most sincere sympathy to Tom and Melanie Haskell and family after the loss of Tom’s mother, Lola, who lived south of Eads near the lakes. She was an avid fan of Eads school activities when Shay and Matt were in school.

Jim Garner brought his parents, Dan and Evelyn Garner, to Eads for a visit and to do business over the weekend. Their friends about town were surely glad to see them.

Jim and Sherri Lyon were down from Wyoming to visit family and friends over the weekend. Some schools in Wyoming had a few days off for the hunting season.

Destiny Saffer, Eads freshman, played with the Lamar Savage Softball team in the State Softball tournament over the weekend. Destiny has enjoyed practicing and traveling with this winning team.

The Eads Knowledge Bowl team left early Monday morning for a meet at Holly High School.

Many folks are talking with great interest about the future Assisted Living Center that is set to be built on the southeast side of Eads. The blue prints look as if it will be a lovely facility for residents.

There were quite a few folks who attended the forum for suggestions on improving the future Kiowa County Fairs. A tip of the hat to the Board Members, Lance Jagers, Violet Lane, Dale Butler, Aręta Laird and Milton Watts who have given so much of their time to organize groups and activities associated with the county fairs.

Our sympathy to Barbara (Paul) Stavely of Haswell whose sister, Vicki Galloway, passed away in Lamar last week. Vicki grew up in the Sheridan Lake community.

An additional note on the Saturday 10:00 am, October 25th Hinkle-Community auction in Haswell is that the Fire Department will offer a lunch as a fundraiser for the community. I have noticed a lot of vehicles and items lined up along Highway 96 in town in preparation for this auction.

Rod Johnson is going to be the speaker at the Annual Farm Bureau meeting on Monday October 27th at the Court House. He will speak about the 2001 Farm Bill and the work of the KCDEF, Kiowa County Development Economic Foundation.

Ruth Koch has enjoyed recent visits from her niece, Pat Benner Roper from Loveland and her daughter, Patsy Kingston from Denver. Pat Roper attended the middle school volleyball game of her granddaughter, Miranda Barber who attends Wiley when she was here. Wiley was playing in Eads and it was fun for Pat to try to identify local folks that she might know after being gone for so many years.

Several local artists are showing their art pieces in the Southeast Guild Annual Fall Art Show in Lamar this week at the Prairie Sky Gallery. The juror is Jeff Brooks who has taught art classes at the Plains Art Gallery. His parents are Dean and Effie Brooks and Jeff graduated from Plainview High here in Kiowa County. He is an acclaimed artist and teacher.

Local FFA members had a clean up day out at the FFA farm south of town. Some of the youth will be leaving next Monday for the National meeting in Kentucky.

Wayne and Alice Glover are home in Eads after Wayne was in the hospital ten days. Wayne likes to have company come by. Their daughter, Peggy, was here and took her niece, Chel-C Glover, to Denver where she flew out to Japan to rejoin her crew on the Harper’s Ferry ship. Alice’s sisters, Mary Hood, of Pueblo and Jane (John) Steinmetz of Eugene, Oregon, and Wayne’s sister, Rosella, have been here from Dove Creek.

We had a letter from Michael Zimmerman who is a student at the University of Colorado-Boulder. He has a night time job as a Certified Nursing Assistant at a Boulder nursing home there which he enjoys. Michael said that he was glad for his training with Kim Englehardt and the clinicians at the Eads Nursing Home He assured Ida that Eads has a superior home for good care and excellent staff for which she heartily agrees. We are grateful for Weisbrod being right here in our home town.

Our sympathy to Jacob and Barbara Diel. Jacob’s sister, Jewell, died recently. The Diel’s have been in Monte Vista for some time to help the family in closing her home.

Muriel Andersen-Hagins formerly of Towner was buried Saturday. She is warmly remembered by her Home Demonstration Club friends from around Eads and the county. She has lived for several years in Texas and is the mother of Darrel (Doris) Andersen now of Tribune, Kansas. Phyllis Vanderwork of Eads drove over to the service. She was accompanied by her daughter, Sylvia Shields. Sylvia and Joe are moving their mobile home from Eads to Vilas where Joe is an educator at the school.

Hazel Krueger, Gloria Peck, and Zelda Peterson hosted the Prairie Piecer Quilt Guild for a luncheon meeting this month at the Eads Senior Center. For their program, they showed a quilt of Elden Reinert’s from his Pleasant Valley School days in this county. They also exhibited a community friendship quilt from the Sheridan Lake community which was given to Jim and Liz Rehfeld when they moved to Lamar. Another lovely quilt was shown by Theresa Weber which her daughter had made of her grandchildren’s handprints. This quilt was quilted by the late Sara Bottorff. Their guests were Judy Beeson, Barbara Wilson, and Theresa Weber who showed their quilted wall hangings that they had made in a class at the Eads Center taught by Pam Addington, Hazel Krueger, and Gloria Peck. Ladies came from long distances for this get together. One lady even drove two and half hours from a mountain town.

Carla Gifford and Janet Anderson treated Betsy Evans to a birthday trip of attending the Rocky Mountain Mennonite auction at Rocky Ford Saturday which features quilts, foods, wood works, and other crafts. Most of this money is used for missions.

The annual Book Fair will be held in the Eads School multi-purpose room at the High School October 28th to November 11th at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The public is welcome to come to browse and shop. This is truly such a wonderful experience and a great chance to buy books and gifts for youth of all ages. Betsy Barnett, Cathy Watson and community volunteers are instrumental in arranging this great service for our community.

Happy birthday to Karl Koch of north Kit Carson who many people call a "walking miracle". Karl’s family is hosting a party for him on Saturday, Oct. 25th at the Historic Silver Spur Saloon on Main Street in Kit Carson from 2-6:00 p.m.

Pastor DeGette Goettel took Shalyn Laird and Jennifer Negley and youth from Lamar to the "Why Wait" Seminar Thursday evening through Saturday in Pueblo. We commend the people in our community who work with Christian youth groups.
