Another 4-H Year Comes to a Close

With the conclusion of the county fair September 10-14, the Sheridan Lake Livewires are busy finishing record books, national report forms, secretarial books, and preparing for the final event of the year: the 4-H Achievement Banquet in November.

The main event of the summer for the Livewires was the annual club tour held the end of July. The club tour is designed to recognize each individual member for his or her accomplishments the past year. This year, the group started at Vincent Koeller’s home where they learned of Vincent’s five projects: Poultry, Market Sheep, Woodworking, Shooting Sports, and Entomology. From there, the group traveled to Miranda, Lana, Lauren, and Natalya Weber’s home. All four girls are in Market Sheep and loved to show their fellow members how they catch their sheep! Lana also gave a project talk on Child Care and Global Citizenship and Lauren on Crocheting and Cake Decorating. Katie Sanders’ home was the next stop. She told us of her Horse and Crocheting projects and gave demonstrations on each. The last stop for the day was Kami and Kirbi Stum’s house where Kami talked about her Market Sheep and Market Hogs and gave a demonstration relating to her Foods With an International Flavor project. Kirbi also answered questions about his market hogs and gave talks about Woodworking, Shooting Sports, and Entomology. After that, the group enjoyed a barbeque dinner at the Stum’s home.

The next event was Exhibit Day hosted by the Sheridan Lake Livewires August 4. The following members were judged that day: Kami Stum-Foods With an International Flavor; Kirbi Stum-Woodworking, Shooting Sports, Entomology; Vincent Koeller-Woodworking, Shooting Sports, Entomology; Katie Sanders-Crocheting; Lauren Weber-Cake Decorating and Crocheting; Cassie Harris-Woodworking and Veterinarian Science; Shelby Harris-Decorate Your Duds and Sewing; Megan Linder-Sewing; Tyler Harris-Woodworking; Lana Weber-Child Care and Global Citizenship; and Megan Fickenscher-Cake Decorating and Clothing. The Livewires did quite well the entire day, with their projects and with hosting the other clubs. Several people complimented the club for their creative decorations for the fashion revue.

August 31, the Livewires traveled to Pueblo to perform their one-act play "The Funtime Fashion Show" at the State Fun Festival. They had a great time and received a blue ribbon. While the members were there, they took the opportunity to see the projects that had made it to state.

Finally, in September, was the county fair. It seemed to go off without a hitch as the Livewires stayed busy with open-class projects, livestock shows and sales, selling rodeo programs, working in the concession stand, preparing for the parade, and taking care of their animals. Everyone seemed to have a great time. Again, the Sheridan Lake Livewires were successful!

Their next meeting is November 4, 2003, at 7 P.M. The meeting will be held in the Plainview School cafeteria. Everyone is invited. Colorado State University, Department of Agriculture, and Kiowa County Cooperative Extension Programs are available to all without discrimination.
