About Town

It was nice to have Floyd and Phyllis Griswould of Limon drop by to visit me in the Hospital. I appreciate so many of my family and friends who have come to visit me. (Ida)

It is always nice to know people appreciate your efforts, like writing the news. Thanks to Betty Watts who wrote to the Press to express that she liked to read the news columns by Curtis Schrimp and myself.

Congratulations to Virgil and Wanda Lessenden who will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on October 12th. We have lots of happy memories from their wedding day at Hanover, southeast of Colorado Springs. We have always said that we are so glad that they happened to meet at the Cheyenne Frontier Days.

It is indeed a small world. One of my nurses, Stacy Phillips, is also my neighbor around the corner on 14th Street. Stacy tells me that her grandparents are Ed and Iva Allacher who lived at Flagler before they passed away. They were my distant relatives since our parents all came from Gols, Austria. Her mother, Florence, has often asked her, "Have you met the Lessenden’s yet?"…now we have met

Another nice service of living in Weisbrod is that you can have your hair styled or permed as I did by Tracy Smith. This gracious lady is the wife of our Superintendent, Glenn Smith,

The Eads Progressive FCE club has been planning for months to host the District 7 Achievement Day for homemakers interested in Family, Communication and Education. We felt that it was really successful. Fran Larrew catered our meal. Sis Howard was the decoration coordinator who brought fine linen clothes, sunflowers, pumpkins, and added other lovely touches to this special day. Bruce Fickensher showed slides of their "Straw House." We had been so curious to know about the progress and finishing of their unusual home near Chivington. We thank Extension Agent Kaye Kazsa and Secretary, Pam Weirich, for their help in organizing this event.

Annie Cole, Esther McCoin, Pansy Foxworthy, Margie Wiltfang, and Faye Barber attended the 27th Annual Speak Out for the Area on Aging Association which was held at the Lamar Cow Palace. They said the lectures, seminars, banquet, and activities were all so interesting and worthwhile. They were especially impressed with the question and answer time with the Legislators, information on "Identity Theft", and the class on grand parenting one’s grandchildren. Faye Barber received a certificate for walking over 800 miles this year recorded on her step meter. I am not surprised for she is so full of energy and caring for other people.

Homecoming Week was fun for the youth. Their parade floats were built around the theme of "Paradise". They passed by the Nursing Home so we could see the Freshmen’s first place float, followed by second place, Sophomores, third place, the Juniors and fourth place the Seniors. The Student Council chose Rich Hockett to be the Parade Marshall. He is a man who is so kind and helpful to many people about town and the county. The kids made a good choice! Rodeo Queen Hollie Watson and T. J. Watts, Outstanding High School Rodeo Cowboy, who are both juniors at EHS, were the flag bearers. The Freshman Class won the coveted "Class with Class Banner" for over-all excellence in cheering, decorations, and float building.

The Community Rally Thursday had an added feature when the students in Kindergarten through fifth grade led a group cheer. Those young ones were really excited about that and of course the people enjoyed seeing them and hearing the band under the direction of John Taylor. The Skits were fun and the Bon Fire was spectacular. Thanks to the leadership of Shawn Kraft and his crew in gathering wood.

Amanda McLoud was crowned the Homecoming Queen and the King was Shawn Kraft. Senior Princesses and Princes are: Lacy Adamson and Sabrina Kiniston, Levi Kraft, and Brad Rehm. Junior attendants were Heather Miller and Josh Fry and Sophomores attendants in the court were Tasha Hueller and Victor Brown with Freshmen Millicent Spady and Victor Brown. The girls arrived for the crowning ceremony in Jimmy and Amanda Brown’s black limonene which added a special touch to the evening. The beautiful flowers were donated by Teresa of the Maine Street Boutique. She even made each boy and girl a lei to remember the "Paradise" theme by. Teresa also made the lovely sashes for the girls. Little Mariah Smith and Rhett Uhland were the crown bearers.

The other good Homecoming news is that the Eads girls won the Volleyball matches and the boys won their football game verses Walsh High School players. Parents of the Volleyball players were introduced following the junior varsity matches. Parents of the Golf Team, Cheeerleader Squad, and Football team were introduced at the 6:30 p.m. Pre-Show. Thanks to Dorie Musgrave, Kathy McCracken, Principal Christy Graham, and the staff who did a lot of planning for the Homecoming festivities along with the class liaisons whose names I will share in another issue.

Jack Howard is home from Denver where he gave a kidney for his brother, Bill Howard. They were in University Hospital for the operations. A number of people about town have been praying for successful surgeries and the health of both brothers. Jack’s wife, Konda, got to stay with her daughter, Byllie Jo, and family while they were in Denver which was really nice for them.

Jean McKibbon of Littleton was down to see her mother, Arla Durrett, at Weisbrod. Maxine Mays was so pleased to have Jean come to visit her. Maxine and Arla have been dear friends for many years.

Congratulations to Shawn Kraft and Jessica Watts for being chosen to be the Wendy’s Heisman Nominees from Eads High School. This is an outstanding honor for these seniors. Their selection was based on academics, service, and sports abilities.

The former Marilyn Baker was here to visit her mother, Maxine Hockett, who is in Weisbrod. Marilyn moved this year from Delaware to Denver. So it is nice that she is closer to home for her especially for her mother’s sake.

Joe, Janie, and Joe Andrew Bush are excellent cooks for their enterprise, Triple J. Catering. Many folks enjoyed their southern cuisine of spicy beef brisket, charro beans, and the nutty coleslaw. Junior student, Joe Andrew makes the coleslaw with peanuts which I really like and plan to buy occasionally. The FFA dinner last Friday was to earn scholarship monies for Eads students.

Sunday afternoon many friends gathered at the Haswell Park for the annual Community Fish Fry. Citizens from the town and country bring in side dishes and have such a good time visiting. Paul Stoker and little Blake have fished many, many days and some nights out at Blue Lake to reel in the fish for this fun event.

Rachel (Zimmerman) Pent, and baby, Morgan flew back from Atlanta with her parents, Paul and Renee’, for a visit with family and friends.
