About Town

I would like to express my deep
appreciation to the Kiowa Press Staff for the very beautiful flower
arrangement they sent to me. I have been enjoying it so much as well as
the red rose bouquet from my precious neighbor, Mona Walker, and for the
get well cards and kindness shown to me here in Weisbrod.
I am surprised at all the long time
friends and neighbors from throughout the area who are residents here in
Weisbrod. They seem to do real well. The Thursday morning Coffee Hour is
quite popular and it is so nice of many people from the community to come
in to visit. You are all so special.
I really admire the residents who
have electric wheels and can come and go as they wish. I’m sure it adds to
their contentment and pleasure.
The 3rd Graders came
Wednesday afternoon for the "Adopted Grandparent" program. I am pleased to
have my great granddaughter, Marisa Dixon assigned to me. She made a
pretty autumn leaf wreath as did the other children and they put them in
the resident’s room. We thank their thoughtful teacher, Charlene Reed.
Della Mae Brice, the Silver Queen of
Weisbrod Nursing Home and our representative at the Rocky Ford Arkansas
Valley Fair, had her "Dream Wish" come true, which was a trip to the
Denver Zoo last Saturday. She was accompanied by the Home’s Activity
Director, Rhonda Krueger and her daughter Myriah, and three generations of
her nieces, Charlotte Phillips, Teresa Witt and Stormy and Ebony. The Zoo
provided the tickets and the Eads Auxiliary bought their supper. They
reported having had a truly wonderful day.
LaRue Adamson was honored by her
family and friends with a noon dinner at the Eads Community Building. By
the appearance of all the cars, there was a huge turn out of well wishers
to honor this dear lady and mother who has so many wonderful family
members.
Diane (Mohler) Provencio called from
California last week, to say that her mother, Winifred, was so pleased to
have received get well cards from her friends. Winnie has come through her
surgery to remove the cancerous kidney. Her son, Bill and Betty, came from
Oregon for two weeks to be with the family. Winnie’s heart is always with
her Eads friends. She is at: Winifred Mohler, Escondido Health Care
Center, 42l East Mission Ave., Escondido, CA, 92025.
Hannah Eder’s home has been a lovely
show place on Maine Street all summer and fall with pretty flowers and
lovely yard ornaments. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren have been
good gardeners.
Chel-C Glover flew to Colorado from
the ocean area near Japan where she is stationed on the Navy ship, USS
Harpers Ferry. She came for a short visit with her family and especially
to visit her grandfather, Wayne Glover, who is very ill. Saturday over 80
family members came from all over the country to honor Wayne’s mother,
Beulah, on her 95th Birthday in Lamar. On Sunday, Alice and
Wayne’s children Peggy, Rick, Bill, and Patty, and all their children were
here to visit, take family photos, and to spend more precious time with
their grandparents. Only one grandchild, Jeff Dunlap couldn’t come as he
is stationed at Paris Island in the Marine Reserves.
Don Karson, former 1970’s social
studies teacher and coach, visited in Eads a while during the volleyball
game last Thursday. He was so interested in former students, the school
plant, and was very impressed with all the gold ball State trophies in the
display cases. Doris noticed that he even stated names of some of his
former football players like Frazee, Miller, and Davis. After leaving Eads
he returned to his home city of Chicago where he taught school till he
retired.
Pastor Phil and Kristi Hirsch and
family, Michel, Emma, Sam, Ella, Ida, Joe, and David, came Friday to
visit. It was so good to see them and my great grand kids. They grow up so
fast. They went to the football game and then watched one of the Eads
volleyball matches at Lamar College Saturday morning before returning to
Kansas.

Other people Doris visited with at
the Eads-Cheyenne Wells football game were Monica (Richardson) Halde and
Julie (Oswald) Kelley. She is always so pleased to know that her former
student friends carry on sharing their talents and expertise with youth.
Monica teaches youngsters horsemanship related to competitions like barrel
racing and Julie and Mark have a Christian youth group at Arapahoe which
draws teenagers from Kit Carson, Cheyenne Wells, Weskan, Kansas, and other
towns. The Kelley’s have warm memories of their experiences with FCA,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, at Eads High School. Their son, David,
is in Iraq, so please pray for him and our soldiers there.
Lance and Taya Jagers and baby,
Cassidy, sponsored FFA members at a State FFA meeting in Colorado Springs
Saturday and Sunday. The seniors, Shawn Kraft, Ashley Brown, and Nick
Banard attended Advanced Leadership Development meetings while the
freshmen, Destiny Saffer, Bethany Kerfoot, Matea Mayo, Millicent Spady,
Sam Lang, Jacob Buck, Josh Crow, Trice Watts, Tyler McCracken, and Victor
Brown attended the Made for Excellence Seminar.
Monday evening the Eads FFA hosted a
chili supper and the Creed Speaking Contest where new members recited the
Creed. The three top winners were Destiny Saffer, Trice Watts, and Jacob
Buck.
Margie Wiltfang was pleased to have
14 adults attend the AARP 55 Alive educational driving class at Haswell
Saturday. They enjoyed lunch together.
The Eads FFA will serve a
Scholarship Benefit dinner at the Ag Building Friday, October 3 at 4:00 pm
to about 8:00 pm. Brisket is on the menu. Two sizeable scholarships were
given to 2003 graduates last May. Let’s support this effort.
Rev. Gary Goettel and Nancy Walker
led the worship service at the Weisbrod Nursing Home Sunday with the
residents and guests. The Pastor shared his morning sermons at the Eads
and Haswell United Methodist Churches. I admire how Nancy (McCracken)
Walker has played the piano at the Home since she was a young girl. What a
blessing.
This is Homecoming Week at EHS. One
change is that the Parade will be at 10:00 a.m. and the Volleyball matches
will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the football game at 7:00 p.m. This year the
Volleyball, Golf, and Football parents will be honored at the 6:30 p.m.
pre-show. The Community Rally and Bon Fire will be Thursday evening at
7:00 p.m. beginning in the gym after the junior high volleyball games.
Geleslie King and Jimmie Brown of
Eads attended the Promise Keepers Convention in Denver over the weekend.
They were glad to see Josh Gifford formerly of Eads.
Kathy McCracken and the Eads
Cheerleaders have been enjoying using the huge break away banner for the
ball games. This Eads Eagle banner was purchased with donations from the
local business owners and fans.
Destiny Saffer has been practicing
and playing softball this fall with the Lamar Savage Team who has been on
a long winning streak. Destiny really enjoys this sport.
Pansy Foxworthy returned from
Missouri on the Amtrack Train Monday. She went right up to Weisbrod to
visit her sister, Myra Watts, when she came home.
