2003 Junior Livestock Sale Results

Well it worked again this year. If
you want to have a weather change in Kiowa County, wait until the county
fair and it will happen. After a scorcher of a summer, the county fair
weather was cool (some would say down right cold!) and a little damp. I
want to remind all 4-H and FFA members to thank the individuals and
businesses that purchased livestock at the sale this year and made your
programs successful. Also, the time donated by the auctioneers – Jim Civis,
Brian Elder, Larry Lusher, Lee Mayo, Rob Morlan, and Marty Neugebauer.
Fifty-four lots sold for an average premium of $475.55 or a total gross
premium receipt of $25,680.00. Although some of the projects had a decline
in numbers, this is seven lots more than we had in the 2002 sale.
For the second year in a row, Brad
Rehm sold the Grand Champion steer. Brads 1366 pound steer sold to L & M
Processing for $1,050, Southern Colorado Critical Care Nurses, Ltd. added
$350 to the premium, to bring its total to $1,400. Weber Water bought the
1130 pound Reserve Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Average-Daily-Gain
steer shown by Megan Fickenscher for $1,375. This steer gained 2.16 pounds
per day for the 194 day feeding period. The 1324 pound Champion
Average-Daily-Gain steer shown by Joe Andrew Bush gained 3.06 pounds and
sold to Farm Credit of Southern Colorado for $775. The four steers in the
sale brought a total premium of $4,300 for an average of $1,075.00.
Twenty-four swine were next in the
sale order with a total premium of $13,625.00, for an average of $567.70.
Vance Coles 269 pound Grand Champion sold to Halde Ready Mix and Greg
Shalberg for $1,100 and Valley State Bank and Heritage Farms purchased
Jace Robersons 266 pound Reserve Champion for $875. Kelly Lindholm showed
the Champion Average-Daily-Gain swine, gaining 2.33 pounds per day for a
final weight of 284 pounds. This animal was purchased by Southern Colorado
Critical Care Nurses Ltd. for $900. Kevin Lindholms Reserve Champion
Average-Daily-Gain swine sold to Southeast Colorado Power Association for
$775. This animal gained 2.28 pounds per day for a finished weight of 290
pounds. All of the swine, sheep and goats for the 2003 Kiowa County Fair
had a 194 day feeding period.
Southern Colorado Critical Care
Nurses, Ltd. also bought Jace Robersons, 135 pound, Grand Champion Market
Lamb for $550. Carrie Robersons, 120 pound, Reserve Champion Market Lamb
sold to Southeast Colorado Power Association for $425. P.J. Wilson
Insurance and Southwind Insurance added $100, respectively, to the price
of these lambs to bring their totals to $650 and $525.The Sheep
Average-Daily-Gain contest had co-Champions this year. Both lambs gained
0.89 pounds per day and were shown by sisters, Lauren and Natalya Weber.
Valley State Bank and DeLoach’s Tires paid $625 for Laurens 145 pound lamb
and Scherler Sales/Farm bought Natalyas 142 pound lamb for $575. Thirteen
lambs brought a total of $6,000 for a $461.53 per animal average.

For the second year, Lesa Cole sold
the Grand Champion Goat. This goat weighed 65 pounds and sold to H&B
Trucking for $410. The 69 pound Reserve Champion Goat was shown by Matea
Mayo and sold to Eads Auto Supply for $300. A total of six goats sold for
$1,575 for a $262.50 average. Two pens of rabbits sold for $150.00. Carrie
Robersons Grand Champions were purchased by Bob Weber for $70 and M&M
Feeds paid $80 for Brandi Robersons Reserve Champions.
Vincent Koellers Grand Champion
Poultry sold to Farmer-Stockman Realty and Auction for $85. Barnes
Fertilizer was the winning bidder for the Reserve Champion Poultry pen,
shown by Jace Roberson. Five pens of poultry averaged $76 for a $380
total.
