Sand Creek Massacre Site UpdateSeptember 12, 2003 The small staff of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site is pleased to welcome the addition of Craig Moore. Craig is a native of Rocky Ford, and has worked for the National Park Service for more than 20 years at Bent’s Old Fort and for the last several years at Washita Battlefield National Historic Site in western Oklahoma. Although his degree from USC Pueblo is in geography, Craig has spent his years with the NPS studying the history and genealogies of the Southern Cheyenne people, especially as they relate to Bent’s Old Fort, Washita, and Sand Creek. Craig is well-known and highly respected in Southern Cheyenne communities as well as in the history community.

Craig will be working on Sand Creek historical research and on improving our public communications. He will be working on newsletters, public presentations, brochures, exhibits, and developing school curricula. The Sand Creek Massacre NHS team is very fortunate to have been able to transfer Craig back from Washita closer to his home and family, and to have his expertise devoted to the development of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. Craig, along with Theresa Horak whom many of you have met at various functions during the last couple of years, are stationed at the Bent’s Old Fort administrative offices in La Junta, at least until our office space grows here in town. In the meantime Craig and Theresa will be back and forth. In fact if you stop by the Sand Creek Massacre Site fair booth today, you can meet Craig in person and we will all be there to say hello. We look forward to seeing you!
