Kiowa County 4-H Council ReportAugust 22, 2003 The monthly meeting of the 4-H Council met at Eads on August 12, 2003. The meeting was called to order by President, Brian James at 7:00. The following people attended the meeting: Brian James, Megan Fickenscher, Shalyn Laird, Vincent Koeller, Bruce Fickenscher, Kaye Kasza, Bonnie Lessenden, Brenda Fickenscher, Areta Laird, Dawn James, PJ, Shane, Dally and Shane Lessenden, Gail Koeller, Brandi Roberson, Milly and Carol Spady Shalyn read the minutes from our previous meeting. Brandi gave the treasurer’s report. The following reports were given: The Council fund raiser held on August 8 which was serving breakfast went over very good. The Exhibit Day report was given by Megan and she reported that it was good and that the Sheridan Lake Livewire club donated the meals for judges/superintendents and clerks. The District Contest was reported by Shalyn everything was good and had good demonstrations this year. The Horse Performance Day was reported on by Brian. He reported 5 juniors and 1 senior competed. Bruce reported that the Market Lamb Shearing was scheduled for Sunday, September 7, 2003 at 3:00 at the fairgrounds. Lance Jagers or Bruce would be demonstrating by shearing one lamb and then each member would shear their own lambs. All lambs to be sheared must be washed before shearing. They will be providing clippers and some stands. Also, they would do goat clipping after the sheep shearing. Megan reported that a lot of girls came for the Fashion Revue Workshop and everything was good. The Food Auction was reported as the following: 14 items were sold, and they averaged $65.00 with a total of $23.55 going towards the scholarship fund.

Membership Fees was discussed next. Next year there was going to be a $5.00 per person fee for all members in 4-H, this money would go to the state level. Bruce announced that the Fairgrounds Clean-Up was set for Sunday, September 7, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. Nominations for the 2003-04 4-H Council Officers were as follows: Senator: Jessica James and Miranda Weber; President: Milly Spady, Kami Stum; Vice President: Milly Spady, Kami Stum; Secretary: Shalyn Laird, Dally Lessenden; Treasurer: Brandi Turcott, Carrie Roberson; Reporter: Megan Linder, Lauren Weber; Leader Advisor: Dawn James, PJ Lessenden, Bonnie Lessenden, Susan Greenfield. Any member wishing to serve as one of the above offices needs to contact the extension office and your name will be added to this list. It was reported that all the 4-H clubs in Kiowa County would have booths for the fair. Upcoming events are: Sept. 4 - Livestock Record Books Due In Office for Fair Pre-Check; Sept. 3-5 - Pick Up State Fair Exhibits From Office (If not picked up they will not be taken to the Fairgrounds!); Sept. 7 - 1:00-3:00 p.m. – Fairgrounds Clean-Up; 3:00 - ??? Sheep Shearing Clinic (do not wear good clothes, you will be doing the shearing!); Sept. 7 - 5:00 p.m. – Kiowa County Queen Contest; Sept. 10-13 - Kiowa County Fair; Sept. 16 - Livestock Record Books Due; Sept. 21 - Interview/Standard Report Forms Due; Sept. 22 - 4-H Council, Haswell, 7:00 p.m.; Sept. 25 - Registration Deadline for 2003 4-H Leaders Forum in Durango; Oct. 5-11 - National 4-H Week. Our next Council meeting will be Monday, September 22, 2003 at Haswell at 7:00 p.m.
