West Nile virus has now been
confirmed in Kiowa County, one horse died on July 27th from the virus.
State public health officials reported there has been a sharp increase in
the number of cases, both human and in horses across the state with an
increase in the eastern plains compared to last year. This is a
preventable disease and you can protect yourself by applying an insect
repellant with DEET to bare skin and wearing a long sleeve shirt and pants
when outside, particularly at mosquito feeding times at dawn and dusk.
Residents should also make certain
that they drain any standing water on their properties and around the
house and make sure screens on windows are in place and do not have any
holes. For more information on West Nile virus please call Kiowa County
Nursing Service at (719) 438-5782.
