Those attending a reunion of the
P.E. and Helen Harris families on July 13 were Paul and Barb Stavely,

and Beau, Tasha Shelton, Jesse and Taylor, Loren DeGeast and Tiffney,
Paula Novak, Samatha and Becky, Alan and Koellena Fitzwater, Heather,
Rebecca, Gobe, Michael, Genna and Joshua, Paul and Kim Brown, Madison and
Jackson, Etta Harris, Michelle and Dave Spralin, Mindy, Mandy, Brittany
and Dakota, Rob and Karen McCaslin, Aleshia, Zak, and Slayton, Christina
Vernetti, J.D., Raven, John and Becka, Cindy and Rocky Hiner, Vicki, Josh
and Sarah Galloway, Vern, Joann and Trista Harris, Terry and Jo Harris,

Raymond and Shirley Wissel of Rock
Springs, Wyoming came to Eads for several days from Woodland Park to visit
Ward and Ruth Wissel. They had been at the Bickel Family Reunion.
Don and Anice Roberts of Siloam
Springs, Arkansas have been here to visit their daughter and husband, Max
and Donna Owens. They were glad to get to see their great granddaughter,
Brandi Shalberg, before she moved back to Colorado Springs where she will
be a senior at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Kiowa County Rodeo Royalty girls are
taking to the road for several parades and rodeos this month. Saturday
night, Queen Lesa Cole and Junior Princesses, Chelsea Batterton and Alicia
James went to Las Animas for the Bent County Rodeo. Next Saturday they
will ride in the Cheyenne County Fair Parade in their shimmering red,
white, and blue outfits. That night they will be at the Little Britches
Rodeo in La Junta.
Our Sincere sympathy to the family
of Dorothy Keyser of Kit Carson. She has been a postmistress there and
served here some years. Dorothy grew up in Eads.
Ruby and Burrel Wissel’s
granddaughters came to visit their grandfather in the Eads Hospital
recently. Ruby is at her Eads home from their mountain home in Fairplay,
Jody Wolf, their granddaughter from Phoenix, brought her two children,
Brandon and Sarah. Their other granddaughter, Becky Wissel, came from
Colorado Springs to visit.
Congratulations to Destiny Lyon
Filbeck of Eads who graduated to gain her GED diploma in a cap and gown
ceremony at Otero Junior College Friday evening. Her family, C.J. Filbeck
and Skyla, grandmother, Dorothy Lyon, mother Valorie, brother, Jade and
Tammy Lyon, Aunt Vicki and Ciara Lyon were there for the reception also.
Word came Saturday morning for
Jennifer Wissel of Fairplay to be prayed for via the prayer chain.
Jennifer is seventeen years old and has had a serious auto accident and is
in Penrose Hospital. She is the daughter of David and Lillian Wissel.
The Kiowa County Sheriff’s office
hosted a two day educational seminar and displays for drug awareness for
emergency responders and the public Friday and Saturday. Saturday morning,
there were several displays of equipment like an ambulance, jaws-of-life,
and other demonstrations at the football parking lot.
The Gooden and Buck families were in
Fort Collins over the weekend where Kennan Gooden, Jacob Buck, and
Demetrius Gilmore played with the Pueblo River Rats Baseball Team.
Johnny and Eunice Weber were glad to
have their son, Doug Weber, and friends home from Pueblo for the weekend
visit.
Alice Weil, June Blooding, Arêta
Laird, Mary Eikner, and Sylvia Weeks of Eads attended the Women of Faith
Conference at the Denver Pepsi Center last week They were pleased to see
Rachel A. Davis of Denver and Barbara Wilson of Sheridan Lake among the
12,000 women. Rachel is in Medical School at the University of
Colorado-Denver.
Tori DeBono of Granada and Rachel R.
Buck returned Friday night from a weeks trip to Steamboat and Clark, where
they were the two youth delegates selected from the Southeast Colorado
area to the Leadership Camp. Their trip was sponsored by the Southeast
Colorado Power Company. The girls had a great educational and learning
time with teenagers from Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, Oklahoma, and
Colorado. Kayla Frederick of Eads, was one of the two delegates who
attended last year from this area.

Four-H members and their families
are getting their projects completed for exhibit at Plainview School on
Monday August 4th. After the judging, there will be a Food
Auction and Fashion Show at 7:00 p.m.
Congratulations to Beth Stavely of
Haswell who has won another fine scholarship of $1,100.00 from the Charter
Fund. There were over 700 applications which were narrowed down to 90.
After these students were interviewed, Beth was among the 45 who were
awarded scholarships. Beth is a 2003 graduate who will be attending
Western State College.
Congratulations to Lynae Vigil of La
Junta and Craig Stavely of Haswell and Pueblo who were married at the
Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pueblo July 25th. Their
reception was held at the Pueblo Union Depot. Lynae is a graduate of the
University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Craig is a graduate at
Colorado State University –Pueblo. Family and friends from the area
celebrated with this young couple in Pueblo Friday.
There were more folks who offered
baked foods of breads and pies by the Larrew ladies, vegetables, eggs, and
other goods at the at Farmers Market at the City Park.
Vi Koch and Sis Howard were noon
luncheon guests at the Karl and Mary Anne Koch ranch north of Kit Carson
to celebrate Sis’s birthday the 24th. Karl grilled the ladies
steaks and hosted a lovely time. We know he is a walking miracle.
We know that our friend, Maxine
Mays, is feeling better because she has begun to bake. We have enjoyed two
loaves of zucchini bread from her kitchen.
Dawn James came by to visit us and
bring us a Fellowship of Christian Cowboy magazine that her children
subscribe to. Most every weekend, Brian, Jessica, and Alicia participate
in rodeos or shows. Dawn will be teaching Social Studies and Computer
Technology courses at Karval this year.
Charlie and Sis Howard are good
personal shoppers for us. Last week, they brought a four function copier.
This will be helpful to Doris and her 4-H friends. We appreciate their
helpfulness in other ways too.
Major changes are happening to the
Bransgrove building on Maine Street in Eads. This is the site of the
future Child Care Center.
The Haswell Mile Marker 4-H Club met
Saturday starting at the home of Greg and Pam Miller where the members
showed the progress on their projects and gave demonstrations. After a
cook-out, they went to the home of Shane and Pam Lessenden where Dally,
and Shane and Kelcie Smith gave demonstrations on sheep, horses, and
goats. Other members who gave project presentations at the Millers were,
Marisa Dixon and Ciara Lyon, Steve, Brandy, and Amber Turcott.
Saturday afternoon Clothing and
Decorate Your Duds 4-H members, Amber and Brandy Turcott, Kelcie Smith,
Ciara Lyon, Marisa Dixon and Dally Jo Lessenden with their leaders sewed
22 children’s pillows. With the use of three sewing machines, the pillows
were ready to give to Loving Homes of Pueblo to children in sheltered
homes or for adoptions. What a truly wonderful community service project
these girls have completed
Several 4-H families from Kiowa
County joined others from southeast Colorado to honor Rod Buchle and his
family at the Lamar Park for their service in Colorado. His job was
eliminated by Colorado State University because of budget cuts; however,
Rod does have a job in Kansas now.
Bob and Renee Woods and Dorothy Lyon
have enjoyed visits from their great grandchildren from Wyoming, the
children of Wendy and Matt.
