55 Participating in Summer Reading Program
By Sharon Johnson
Librarian
July 25, 2003
There are fifty-five youngsters
signed up for the Kiowa County Public Library District’s summer reading
program, Camp Read-A-Lot. We had our first two sessions during the week of
July 14. On July 17, forty kids and adults visited the Kiowa County Museum
and were treated to a snippet of an old western silent film. Ruthanna
Jacobs and Joyce Berry were our hosts for the visit and explained the
early movie processes. The museum has three silent films on video for
viewing by the public as well as a collection of original movie playbills.
Try to take some time this summer and visit the museum. The movies are an
extra special addition to an already impressive collection. We are so
fortunate to have an active historical society that cares enough to
preserve our heritage.
In keeping with the camping/outdoor
theme, this week’s programs will include wilderness survival presented by
Rod Johnson and outdoor photography presented by HoneyBelle Dixon. Both
programs will begin at 11:00 a.m. Next week’s programs will include camp
cooking/safety presented by Bryant Will of the Colorado Division of
Wildlife and the Readers’ Theater finale. Both of these programs will be
held at 1:00 p.m. to avoid the conflict with swimming lessons. The
public is (as always) invited to the Readers’ Theater presentation.

There have been three winners in the
"camp tent" contest so far. They are Zach Haase, Reilly Rittgers, and
Calvin Ullman. Each week two new items are added to the camp tent. The
campers enter their guess into the water bucket for a chance to win
prizes. Six campers have won books. They are Zach Haase, Fisher Kinnamon,
Hailey Ray, Tyler Rouse, Shealynn McCracken, and Jonathan Splitter.
Campers enter their name into the fishing creel for each book they read
(or each chapter) for a chance at the grand prizes. This year we have
Colorado Rockies Baseball tickets again (thanks to Harvey & Sandi Kelley
and Lori Kelley Hartman), a backpack filled with camping gear, Barnes &
Noble gift certificates and maybe a few surprises. The grand prizes will
be awarded at the Readers’ Theater presentation.
Kiowa County Public Library has
several books for kids and adults on camping and/or sightseeing in
Colorado. Margaret’s Magnificent Colorado Adventure by Julie
Danneberg takes you on a tour of Colorado’s most famous tourist
attractions. Hiking Through Colorado’s History by Vickie Leigh
Krudwig is an activity book that makes Colorado history a fun adventure. A
perfect companion for those mini Colorado vacations is Colorado’s
Quick-Fact Book compiled by Midwest Research Institute and Capper
Press. The complete hiking and climbing guide to the mountains of Colorado
is A Guide to the Colorado Mountains by the Colorado Mountain Club.
And, The Colorado Guide by Bruce Caughey & Dean Winstanley is a
comprehensive guide on almost every event/attraction/historical site/camp
and/or motel and much, much more. This book has it all. Come and check one
out from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or call us for more
information at 719-438-5581.
