The Eads Senior Citizens met
Wednesday, June l8th at noon for a lovely pot luck dinner and business
meeting with 41 present. Thanks to Shalyn Laird of the Prairie Queen 4-H
Club who made the dinner rolls. She was assisted by Jennifer Negley. Pansy
Foxworthy showed a video that is a new home business for her Kansas City
family. They make videos for people on their family history and genealogy.
Jane Winslow talked about a new program that helps people who qualify to
make home repairs at about a 1% loan. For more information contact Faye
Barber or someone at the Center. The next meal will be a supper on July 3rd
at 6:00 p.m. and the noon dinner on July 16th that will be
picnic foods.
Betty Jacobs spent several days in
Oklahoma City visiting her daughter, Kas Davisson. Three of her
granddaughters accompanied her, Melanie Walther and son, Lance of
Burlington, Michelle Wolf, of Littleton, and Leah Beth Fischer, Arkansas
City, Kansas. On Saturday they visited the museum to view the display of
artifacts retrieved from the Titanic. It was amazing how well preserved
everything is, leather, jewelry, suitcases, even pen and ink writing on
some things. The display will be there until July 6th when it
will be moved elsewhere.
Sis (Louise) Howard of Eads and
Marcy Ricke of Cheyenne Wells left early Wednesday morning to pick up Mona
Appel in Lamar and headed for Oklahoma City where ladies from all over the
nation converged last week. This was the site of the National Lutheran
Women’s Missionary League Convention. Sis was looking forward to spending
the week with her daughter, Dr. Angela Howard, at the convention. These
Colorado ladies are officers of the Eastern Plains Zone LWML.
Our most sincere sympathy goes to
Alice Weil whose son, Rob Weil, lost his life suddenly last week on his
way home from work. His wife, Marsha, passed away two and a half months
ago. Our heartfelt prayers and concern are with Alice and her families.
His graveside service was to be held Thursday, June 26th at
Eads.
Robin Musgrave and Doris had a good
time shopping in Lamar. They went to the eye doctor and also went to two
ball games in Eads last week. Robin and her family helped her sister, Sue
Musgrave, move to Unity Village in Eads.
Kyla Matthews of Colorado Springs
visited me Tuesday afternoon before going to spend the evening with her
friend, Lacy Law, who lives in Lamar.
With the coming of the end of June
many of the youth are having their last baseball games. It has really been
fun to watch them from our car as they come and go because the youth
always are so eager to play. It is such a nice family time plus it really
brings out the extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins,
baby sitters, Sunday school teachers and neighbors who come to see the
kids play.
Another interesting sight has been
to see the local high school girls play ball. Unlike the boys they mostly
wear a uniform with shorts or stretch pants. Last week our girls lost
their first game this season to a quite experienced Stratton team. But
they were still going to play another game that night.
Virgil and Wanda Lessenden, Glenda
Stoker and children were over from Haswell to see Dylan Dixon and his team
play T-ball. Some of those youngsters look so tiny, but what fun they have
really running. They don’t appear to keep score, just have fun and isn’t
that the way it should be? Monday night of this week, it was great to see
all the extended families that came to see children play their last game.
Some families that come to mind are: Uhland, Wollert, Weeks, Randel, Buck,
Grasmick, Watts, Miller, Baxter, Spady,, Mitchell, White, Hammond, Coen,
Saffer, Niemann, Koch, Gooden, Kraft,Philpy, Fox, Richardson, and many
others.
Mountain men and women and their
families met for the annual Rendezvous up on Big Sandy Creek southeast of
Kit Carson. The people, who participate stay in Indian Teepees, wear "old
time" clothing, cook out, camp out, and compete in games and skills of
that period of time. James Deverman and Doris ventured out across the
trail roads to see the site. She was so amazed by the abundance and beauty
of the prairie flowers in the creek bed.

We were so delighted Wednesday
evening to have Virgyln and Kristi Hirsch and children drive in from
Manhattan, Kansas for a couple of days to visit us and to see cousin,
Jacob’s , baseball game. I hadn’t seen the children since Christmas and
they do grow so fast. Dwight dropped by to fix the wheels on my cart so
they had a little visit too. That afternoon, Glenda Stoker and her
children came over to visit. They love to paint pictures with their Aunt
Doris and to help around the house. The boys picked up a lot of green
apples but Doris didn’t know there were mulberries in the back yard too.
Oh what a mess on the newly vacuumed and mopped floors!!
The FCE Progressive Club met at the
Senior Citizen Center Thursday. 4-H members Tara Spady, Jennifer Negley,
and Chevaun Glover gave talks and showed their Creative Cook table
settings.
Pastor Don Lott and Tony Jensen,
Youth Leader, took teenagers to Cedar Edge to the ten camp last week. That
is a long trip over there, but worth all those miles.
Melissa Peterson’s reports about the
Plains Art Gallery are so interesting. Readers enjoy reading about local
artists. A "tip of the hat" to Kim (Philpy) Barlow who is gifted with so
much talent and does marvelous works of art that have won some pretty
grand prizes in shows the last few years. Melissa featured Kim in the
Kiowa Press last week.
Harvey and Sandie Kelley are glad to
have their granddaughter, Molly, here this week from Northglenn as are
Lyle and Judy Beeson to have their granddaughter, Abbi, from, Lamar.
Millicent Spady, Brian James, and
Megan Fickenscher were 4-H delegates to the State 4-H Conference on the
Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins last week. They were
accompanied by adult leader, Bonnie Lessenden and agents Kaye Kasza and
Bruce Fickenscher.
Pastor Gary and Pastor DeEtta
Geottel, Areta and Shalyn Laird were the representatives from the Eads-Haswell
United Methodist Churches to the Annual Conference which was held on the
campus of the University of Wyoming in Laramie last week.
Becca Specht and cousin, Erin Specht
of Sheridan Lake and Towner and Andrew Adams of Rocky Ford have been the
teen missionaries this week for the 5-Day Club we held in our home. They
are trained by the Child Evangelism Fellowship leaders. These high school
students are splendid storytellers, singers, and leaders. We are blessed
to watch many children and youth come to our home this week to hear God’s
word.
Ilene Eder, Faye Barber, Lacy
Adamson, and Mary Anne Hulteen were the guests and worship leaders at the
Haswell and Eads United Methodist Churches last Sunday. Mary Anne told
about her trip to Israel and some of the work that her daughter, Liz, is
doing in that country. Lacy blew the ram’s horn as people do in the Holy
Land. This is a difficult feat for many people.
