About Town

In this part of Colorado we are enjoying beautiful green pastures after last year when they looked so brown most of the year. The cattle and antelope are peacefully grazing. I’m sure the ranchers have glad hearts.

Johnnie Holcomb and sister, Vicki, stopped by Wednesday evening to leave a pretty very large yellow wooden pencil on a blue book that he had made. It can be used as a door stop or an art deco which we are using in our blue ramp room. Johnnie as been the superintendent at the Plainview Schools for two years and is moving back to Texas where his family lives. He has several job offers there. Johnnie said his little 6 year old granddaughter, McKenzie Huggins, has had a miraculous recovery from brain tumor surgery. Johnnie said, "That miracle is the power of prayer" and certainly a lot of prayers were made for this precious little child.

The community gives their sincere sympathy to the family of Clara Uhland. May God bless and comfort this family is the prayer of their friends. Clara will be remembered as such a gracious, cheerful lady and mother of six children. Our lives were more intertwined following l949 when their three children, Judy, Shirley Kay, and Jerry, and our daughter, Doris, came down with polio within a two week period. We were farming and ranching neighbors for many years also.

Several area ranchers have been getting their cattle branding done these past weeks. It’s always a satisfaction to them to have it done for the season. It is good to hear how many people lend a helping hand to their neighbors and friends.

Congratulations to June Weeks on her 80th birthday party which was hosted by her children and grandchildren at her home church in Lamar. She is a lovely lady who really enjoys her grandchildren and great grandchildren here in Eads. Recently she went on the tour bus to Branson, Missouri

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howard had house guests from Florida Sunday. They had their home painted on the outside last week. My, it does look lovely.

Joe Schmitt and six workers came from Strasburg last Thursday to pour cement in the pilings under Ruth Miller’s home. The huge machinery was amazing to see. It appeared to be two white trucks with lots of technical computerized equipment that controlled a long, long silver neck-like devise that extended from the trucks in the street to under the house. It reminded one of a metal dinosaur. Ruth says, "At any rate, I am happier now."

Sometimes our best laid plans get changed at the last minute, for example Koy and Chevaun Glover, her mother, Donna Heddles, were all set to travel to the western slope last Tuesday, and suddenly, Koy became ill. She had to have her appendix removed that very day. There went her vacation!

Ryan Trosper of Eads, Morgan Foster of Walsh, and Andrew Froese of Cheraw were Southeast Colorado’s representatives in the Colorado IA and IIA All-State Basketball Games that were held last week in Greeley. Nancy Larrew drove up from Denver to watch her nephew, Ryan, and after the games, their family had a nice dinner together.

There was a large color photo of Miles Philpy golfing in the Pueblo Walking Stick Golf Tournament in a Pueblo newspaper last week. Miles played on those days when it was really cold and rainy, but he won tenth in the tournament.

Some of the members of the Chamber of Commerce and other volunteers hosted early morning breakfasts Saturday and Sunday mornings out at Lake Nee Noshe for the big 18th Annual Southeast Colorado Fish and Game Club Tournament.

Jerry and Pam Weirich hosted a Father’s Day cook out Saturday evening for the men in their Brown and Weirich families. What a lovely evening for their get-together.

We were glad to have our former country neighbor, Julie (Addington) Larrew and her daughter, Susan, and grandson, Brandon, stop by to visit us one morning when they were taking a walk about town. They had brought Julie’s mother-in-law, Betty Larrew, down from Fort Collins to visit friends and relatives around Haswell and La Junta.

We had a cook-out meal with Shane and Pam Lessenden and their children at Haswell last Wednesday. Other guests were Greg and Pam Miller and his parents who are here from Florida. As we left we heard the firemen’s bell reminding people to come to the Fire House for a meeting and there were lots of people there. After that April 19, 2000 prairie fire, people have really regained an interest in protecting their property and land. I’m impressed to hear of their training and new equipment.

Ryan Trosper played in a Junior Golf Tournament at Colorado Springs this week on Monday and Tuesday. This was great experience before playing golf for a college team.

Sixteen members from the Christian Motorcyclist Association came to our Kit Carson church Sunday. What a treat that was to meet them and see those beautiful cycles all lined up under the trees! As we came into the church, we were welcomed by Roger and Betsy Evans with cinnamon rolls and coffee. Their CMA representative told us about some of their mission work and goals. The Evans’ belong to this group so they hosted them for dinner at their country home plus other guests and Pastor Tom Burch from Arapahoe who drove in on his motorcycle after his services.

Justin Crow was featured in a photo article last week as he is playing for the area senior Babe Ruth Baseball Team and also works out with the Lamar Community College Lopes Baseball team.

Bonnie and Celena Lessenden took Hazel Spady to the family reunion that was held at Erie, on Saturday.

It was good to see Kent Frazee when he was here on vacation from his home in Hawaii.

Prairie Queen 4-H members have been busy cooking for a bake sale to earn money for World Hunger. Girls are sewing on garments, decorating their duds, and several have been here at our home having cooking lessons. Next week is the Creative Cooks, Cake Decorating, and Demonstration Contest on June 25th at 4:00 pm out at the Community Building for those who would like to attend.

Sharon and Beatle Koch and her three brothers and sister, Carol, hosted a big surprise 50th Wedding Anniversary party in Leoville, Kansas, over the weekend for her parents, Merlin and Lola Diederich. They went back to the little town and to the beautiful church where they were married to take family photos. If you know Sharon, you know that she really likes to "throw big parties that have splendor and pizzazz!

Brian and Jessica James camped out with about 50 other Fellowship of Christian Cowboys at the Bible and Rodeo Camp near Genoa, last week. On Saturday they came home to compete in the 4-H Horse Show here in Eads.

I’d like to express my appreciation for people’s prayers, cards, and visits and the many kindnesses. It is all appreciated. God bless you all in special ways.
