He purchased the Kit Carson Stop and Shop food store from Clyde in 1950 and moved his family to Kit Carson where he, with the assistance of wife Joan, sons Gordon and Norman, and daughters Sheryl and Karen operated the grocery store until his retirement in the summer of 1988.
Herbert’s hobbies were his store and his yard, which he maintained himself until recent years when it became too much for him. The community could see him on his riding lawn mower caring for his yard, the store yard, and his rental properties.
Some of his favorite moments were spent in the Fruita and Grand Junction area Visiting with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren over the holidays. Herbert was a private person and enjoyed traveling to see relatives but was always ready to get back home where he lived alone until March 27, 2003. He spent a few weeks at the Eads Nursing home before moving to Fruita with Karen and family.
