Artists of the Plains InsightsJune 13, 2003 There have been several meetings of art club members in the past few weeks. The building where the gallery is housed is up for sale. Discussions have centered on the possibility of the club purchasing the building. A vote was taken at the June 5th meeting to proceed to find out more information about the club’s chances of buying the property and keeping the gallery intact. Most activities scheduled for the summer have been tabled due to this new development. However, there will be an oil painting class on June 28-29. Jeff Brooks, Director of the Lincoln Gallery in Longmont, will be teaching the class. The cost is $50 for both days. Please call Sandy Jones for further details. Plans for the regional art show to be held in September are also underway. There will be more information in July’s column concerning this event, or anyone interested in submitting artwork could contact Sandra Jones for more information. The winner of the People’s Choice Award for most popular quilt during the April quilt show goes to Pam Addington for her "Landscape" quilted wall hanging. It is a beautiful compilation of fabrics and colors and beautifully quilted. All of the quilts were beautiful and will be treasured for generations to come. I hope folks have noticed the lovely flowers abloom in front of the gallery. Ethel Richards, along with daughter Janet Fredericks and husband Jerry did a fine job planting them. Thanks mates! Featured Artist Kim (Philpy) Barlow is a native daughter and is the art club secretary. She does a very fine job taking minutes, organizing, and disseminating material for the monthly meetings. Kim is married to Kirk Barlow and they have four grown children and one grandchild, with another due later this year! You can find Kim serving delectable fare at Our Place Restaurant, always with a smile and a witty retort.

As a graduate of Eads High School, Class of ’74, she went on to CSU for one year as an art major. She also attended the Rocky Mountain School of Art for one and one-half years. She then met her prince charming, married and began a family. The Barlow’s reside in Eads. Kim’s medium is colored pencil and she has won numerous ribbons and prestigious awards for her art. She won Best of Show for "The Lesson" and Best of Show for "The Skater". No doubt "Cowboy" will take top honors as well. Kim joined the art club in 2001 and has been drawing only two years. Several artists, including renowned painter, Jeff Brooks, from Longmont, have commented that Kim has a natural talent for drawing. She has recently begun painting with oil, which she enjoys. We are all so pleased to have Kim on board at the gallery and as secretary for the club. Please stop by the gallery and view some of her drawings and soon-to-be oil paintings! Artists of the Plains Art Gallery is opened Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please drop by and look around. There is a volunteer artist on duty, sometimes two or three and they would be glad to show you around or just sit and chat a bit. You can view some works-in-progress as well!
