About Town

Our sympathy to the family of Ray Buck of Eads. I always remember him as such a nice caring man. A number of family members and friends gathered at the cemetery for his burial Thursday morning.

Bill Glover has come back to Eads after 20 years in the Navy. His brother, Richard, himself a retired Navy man, wanted Bill’s homecoming to be memorable so he arranged with Sheriff Frazee and Deputy Jim Lafferty, both retired Navy men, to have Bill escorted into Eads to the Court House. However to Bill’s surprise, he hadn’t done anything wrong but, waiting at the Court House Park were his family and friends for a cake and ice cream welcoming home party.

Betty Shotton stopped by to see me last Friday. She was on her way to Kit Carson to watch her grandson, Derrick, who is one of the Babe Ruth baseball players.

My Kansas kid headed back there Wednesday morning. We all enjoyed having her home for a few days. I really appreciated having my family come to visit me while I was in the hospital last week. We are so grateful to have a hospital and nursing home right here in our little town! They have beautifully redecorated the entryway and halls with white stucco walls instead of the dark brown paneling. The offices are rearranged and the paintings and décor appointments are lovely. Much thanks for this improvement to the leadership of Administrator Jim. Murphy, Carl Blodgett, Vicki Lyon and other workers.

Alex Golobuewski was honored with a birthday party at his home last week. He is glad to have his grandmother here from Poland who is such a good cook. His grandfather who was here this spring has returned to their homeland.

We drove out to watch the Colorado Junior Rodeo that was hosted in Eads Saturday and Sunday. We saw lots of local adults and FFA members volunteering to make this huge weekend a success and of course we enjoyed our meals from the 4-H Concession Stand. Local cowboys and cowgirls were: Tallara Hansen, T. J. Watts, Trice Watts, Kelcie Smith, Tanaia Hansen, and Chelsey Batterton. 170 Contestants came from Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado ranging in age from 5 to 18 years old. I am always in awe of the spacious, very expensive looking horse trailers, modern campers, and trucks that the rodeo families travel in. I admire this family affair and to see how the parents are right out there to help and encourage their children and teenagers. It is heartwarming to see this is a "family thing".

We could hear the public address system from the rodeo arena clear over here at our home on 13th Street. At 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning one could hear the clear lovely voice of a young girl singing the "Stars Spangled Banner." Later I learned that it was our own Mary Eikner.

A "Tip of the Hat" to Craig and Darla Hansen and Milton and Dawn Rae Watts who organized the Junior Rodeo. They are very thankful for all the business and private sponsors of this event. Rodeo fans can see the next rodeo in Lamar, June 14th and 15th.

Our sincere sympathy to the family of Mary May who has been in the Weisbrod Nursing Home for some time. She lived most of her life around Lamar and is the mother of Emma Briggs of Eads.

Alexa and Madeline Marsh of Longmont were here over graduation weekend. They were house guests of Elizabeth Davis’ family. They enjoyed visiting with former classmates and church friends. Their parents, Rich and Pastor Kay Marsh, send greetings to friends about town.

Louis and Dawn James, Jessica and Alicia flew to Disneyland in California last week. Son, Brian, stayed home to take care of the ranch chores while sister, Jennifer is taking classes in Boulder at the University and the rest of the family is traveling. Brian also took his turn at grilling hamburgers at the 4-H concession stand during the rodeo.

Several 4-H members from Kiowa County have been at 4-H Camp near Beulah this week. This is an exciting time of new experiences for the youth.

I’m sure it was a busy and exciting Sunday morning for about 45 or more folks, many from Kiowa County who boarded a charter bus for Branson, Missouri to see the sites ant attend the shows. After reading the itinerary, it looks as if this will be a packed week of activities at this popular vacation place.

This has been a busy three weeks at the Dwight and Bonnie Lessenden household as they have been remodeling their kitchen and installing new appliances with the goal of hosting a University graduation and birthday party for their son, Tearle, Sunday afternoon. They have been lucky to host many outdoor parties in their pretty yard, but at this one, we ate most of our food quickly in the sprinkling rain and then hurried elsewhere to have homemade ice cream and cake.

When we came home, we noticed that there were still many cowgirls and cowboys competing in the rodeo after the rain had passed by. We heard reports of one to four tenths of rain about town…but when you are in the rain, it seems like a lot more rain is falling. But we do appreciate the rain. The prairies and wheat are really looking good.

The yucca, "Madonna Candles of the Prairie," is blooming more beautifully than we have seen them for several years. Along the highways we see lots of violets, blue flax, orange wild geraniums, prairie primroses, and gaillardias as well as buttercups and turtles. I always say this mean "rain is coming".

The Eads First Christian Church and Kit Carson Trinity Lutheran Church are hosting Vacation Bible Schools for their communities this week. What a blessing for our youth.

On sunny days, lots of youth can be seen at the Eads Swimming Pool. Families certainly do appreciate this service of the Town of Eads.

About nine of our Eads teachers are at Bent’s Fort Inn for several days this week to take college classes and in-service training with other teachers from Southeastern Colorado.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howard were in Colorado Springs last week for medical tests and are encouraged that he is doing quiet well.

Our sincere sympathy to the families of Herb Crow who passed away. Herb has brothers, George and Ray, and sisters, Mabel Yost and Bing Dixon, living here in Eads and many other relatives. Herb lived in Kit Carson for many years and had a fine grocery store there.

On behalf of my grandson, Tearle, I would like to say, that he very much appreciated the relatives and many friends who came for his party. Some came from distances including his former Ag –FFA teacher, Chris and Karen Henderson and family. God bless you all. Rain is hard to come by in our country and it’s timing Sunday was a bit of a problem. But we are grateful for the rain and fellowship.

Brother Alvin and Margaret Clamp enjoyed a retreat in the mountains that their daughter arranged for them recently. It was a refreshing trip.
