About TownMay 30, 2003 Many Eads senior citizens gathered at the Center Wednesday May 21st for a fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy, salads and desserts. Guests were Pastors Gary and DeEtta Goettel and Pastor Donald and Mrs. Wendy Lott and Winston, Mary Eikner, Katie Bost, and Doris Lessenden who were welcomed by President Faye Barber. Faye chaired the business meeting and Doris gave a report on the Area of the Aging Council meeting in Ordway. These meetings are so important to the people at the Center because they deal with funding, activities, and legislative news for all senior citizens. At the close of the meeting three tables of people had a good time playing cards with a lot of fun and laughs. The Thursday evening supper meeting will be June 5th at 6 o’clock. Preston Hoffman graduated from Eads High Saturday and his brother, Brandon, will graduate from DeVry University in Kansas City with a degree in Telecommunication Networking June 20th. Their parents are Tom and Lana Hoffman of Eads and grandmothers are Lougene Jacobs and Louise McCrary both of Eads. Patrick and Rachel (Zimmerman) Pent sent us such a lovely birth announcement of their daughter, Morgan Ella, from their home in Georgia. I hear that Morgan’s grandparents and great grandparents, Paul and Rene’ Zimmerman of Haswell and Richard and Bonita Morgan of Eads are happy to have their family come to Colorado for a visit. We wish our Eads graduates a very happy and successful future. They left on Sunday for an educational trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They had a very nice graduation ceremony with many scholarships awarded by Principal Christy Graham and donors from clubs and private groups from the community. Martina LeGrand had a situation of her granddaughters, Laura Lindholm of Eads and Chelsey Howard of Cheyenne Wells graduating at the same hours. So she went to the Eads ceremonies and then to the party in Cheyenne Wells. Martina is a busy, happy grandmother keeping up with her grandchildren’s sports, FFA, and 4-H activities and church functions. Clayton and Gloria Peck spent this last week in Las Cruces, New Mexico to attend the Las Cruces High School graduation ceremonies of their granddaughter, Kimbir. The high school band played for the ceremonies and granddaughter, Klayci, was a member of the band. While in Las Cruses, they attended the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum San Ysidro. Granddaughter, Koddi, played the violin in the 6th grade Mariachi Band performance at San Ysidro. Family and friends are "praising God and thanking Him for watching over our Jessica Borns" who was not injured badly in a recent auto accident when she was returning from Texas. Ryan Trosper was glad to have his relatives come for his graduation, especially his grandmother, Merril Trosper and her sister, Ruth McCully who drove her up from Kingfisher, Oklahoma. A number of families hosted parties after graduation for their sons and daughters. How nice for family and friends to gather to give their best wishes and enjoy cakes and foods. It was heartwarming how the elementary teachers brought in foods to help their co-workers, Lane and Debbie Gooden, for their party to honor their daughter, Tiffanie. The Goodens have been in Florida much of the last several weeks since Debbie’s father died. We know what a blessing friends can be in stressful and joyful times. Zelda Peterson, Annie Cole, Faye Barber, and Doris Lessenden were in Ordway last Tuesday to attend the meeting for the Area of Aging where representatives from Baca, Prowers, Bent, Kiowa, and Otero met to hear the latest news on legislation, benefits, the "Speak Out" on October 2 and 3rd, and other opportunities for older Americans. We appreciate Faye who always attends to keep our Center informed. They also visited Evelyn Durrett in the Crowley County Nursing Home. They thought she was doing really well. We had a good time watching the Babe Ruth baseball game with Eads and McClave last Thursday evening. Eads won both games handily. It was nice to see the little guys (younger in age) come in to the field with bat and gloves all excited and anxious for practices or to play ball. Thank you, to the volunteers for making it possible for these boys and girls to play and to improve their skills. We saw several college boys come to umpire for the last game.

The Eads 8th grade class headed for Denver last Monday for their trip. Although it was a cold and windy day, they had a good time. Katie Bost visited Doris last week. She likes to hear about her former students. Katie was on the Presidents Academic List at Western State College this semester. She started a job at a private ranch high above Gunnison which sounds rustic and fun. Esther McCoin drove to her former home in Montana to spend a month with her mother who is over 100 years old. She lives alone so it was good for Esther to be with her mother and to visit some of her brothers and sisters there. She also attended a nursing alumni gathering. Clayton and Gloria Peck of Eads and Kim Peck of Craig, visited Kelly and Jane Lujan and girls at their home in Albuquerque, New Mexico last week. John and Mary Anne Hulteen’s daughter, Liz, flew to Israel to work with the Jews who immigrate from Russia and other countries. Liz has been in the Holy Land three times and just feels so at home to volunteer there. Mr. and Mrs. Brad Buck and Rachel hosted a pizza supper with birthday cake and ice cream honoring Jacob on his 14th birthday. His four grandmothers, Vi Koch, Karla Buck, Virgyln Griswould, and Ida Lesseneden were all in attendance. Travis Lessenden was home over the weekend to help his parents put a metal roof on the house and help with some kitchen remodeling. Children are such a blessing! It seems odd that down through the years Memorial Day was on May 30th. Does someone need a vacation one week earlier? To me it will always seem that May 30th is the Day. It would be interesting to know who and why they pushed it around. Does it seem less important to those we honor on that Day? Doris was impressed with what a nice service the VFW hosted at the Kit Carson Cemetery Sunday afternoon. She was glad to see veteran, Areta Laird, there taking part in the ceremony to honor veterans and loved ones. Max Mays was glad to have his daughter, Bonnie, from Kansas spend last week with him. One of the nicer things about Memorial Day is to see all the people who come to town and to the cemeteries. Many people we do not recognize, but you know they are coming to remember their loved ones. We thank Paul Simmons and anyone else who helps him for the good care of our Eads Cemetery. Tiffanie Gooden, Keyvis Gilmore, and Ryan Trosper all of Eads played in the McDonald’s of La Junta Southeast Colorado All-Star Basketball game at Otero Junior College May 22. The fans enjoyed seeing outstanding players matched up on Blue and White Teams for the games.
