Middle School Students Make Good Showing

Every year the Eads Middle School students enter the Colorado Law Enforcement Officers’ Association’s (CLEOA) annual essay contest to present their writing to a larger audience, and perhaps win a few dollars. The contest is open to all Colorado sixth, seventh and eighth graders in order to bring about an early awareness of the issues that plague today’s teens. The sixth grade essay focused on drugs and alcohol and the effects they have on our society. The seventh grade wrote about peer pressure, either positive or negative, and how it affects their lives. The eighth graders wrote their essays on violence and gangs and how our society deals with such issues.

Out of 500 entries the Eads Middle School took four prizes. Sarah Sykes took first place in the eighth grade division, winning $100 for her essay. Kevin Lindholm took third place in the seventh grade division, winning $50. Daniela Salinas took fourth place in the seventh grade division, winning $25. Tara Spady took second place in the sixth grade division, winning $75. Gary Oyen of the Bent County Sheriff’s Office awarded checks and certificates to the students on May 1, 2003. All students are to be commended on their hard work, and congratulations to the winners.
