Wild Horse RoundupMay 9, 2003 Tuesday, our friend, Clayton Hughes of Missouri, along with Red Craven, stopped by for a short visit. Clayton comes out every spring and fall and he picks up Red and they take a drive out just to bring back memories of when he worked around here for Burn Keller and other folks. He said the fishing had been poor but he brought us some crappie he got from someone. Our congratulations to Chandra Mayhan for her signing to play volleyball and basketball at McPherson College. I think it’s great when our small school turns out such talented young folks. It makes me think back to when our daughter, Lee Ann, played ball at Sterling and then to Wyoming. It caused us to drive a lot of miles. I am happy to report we received 0.53 of rain Thursday night. It surely made us feel good to receive any amount. Marty had a sad thing happen at the ranch. When she got home Thursday evening, she found one of her horses dead. Tony Hammer said that morning he was jumping around so he thought heart attack. Marty’s old mare doesn’t want to leave him.

There was quite a story in the Fence Post about the C.C.C. camps. That brings back memories of cleaning ditches and working on dams near Hugo. Mr. Compton was my boss, and he was sure a fine man. Well, Steve had a birthday the 30th, but as usual I forgot it. Marty called him and the whole family were there having ice cream and cake. Lee Ann called him here as she knew he would be here working. The girls sang happy birthday and their voices were beautiful. They sing in a choir at church and other places. I guess I should give a bathroom report. Steve, Marty and Debbie worked last night (Friday) till 10 o’clock and it’s after 9:00 now and they’re still working. I stay out of the way as I wouldn’t be much good. My therapist is done, so I am on my own now. I walk without a cane now, but very carefully. May 1, I read an article about May baskets and the May Pole. There was a park across the street from our school and the kids went around a pole weaving it with pretty paper. We made baskets from wallpaper samples and filled them with wild flowers we picked out in the country in the timber. We put them on people’s porch and knock and hide and watched them come get them. When I stop to think back that’s probably 80 years ago. Whooee!
