About Town

Congratulations to Alice Weil of Eads who was given the "Award of Excellence" during the Unity Lodge 22nd Annual Barbeque dinner May 3rd. There was a large crowd who attended along with Alice and her daughters, Kendra Bloder of Pueblo and Sally Brelsford from Wyoming. The recognition was a real surprise to Alice but not to her friends.

Lee and Maxine Blooding were here for several days last week to visit June Blooding and other relatives. They also attended the Masonic Banquet.

When I came in the house on May 1st after working in the yard, I found a May Basket with a flower and beautiful poem was on the door handle. I have no idea who this angel is but we thank the person(s) for the beautiful thoughts and May Basket. Down the years, I’ve heard of May baskets and on seeing this handmade basket, it was a thrill for me to know that this tradition is still carried on by some people.

Last Thursday evening Dawn James’ music students and band students presented their spring concert at the Crow-Luther Fine Arts Center. The lovely children and youth from pre-school to high school pleased the audience with their singing and playing instruments. Carole Spady assisted by Cathy Watson directed the pre-schooler’s. Pianists were Nancy Walker and seventh grader, Jessica James..

Thursday evening was also the Co-op Dinner at the Community Building. Co-op Manager, Kip Peck, was pleased with all the folks who came even with two big events on one night. The speaker was Doyle Smith of Fort Collins who works with the Colorado Co-Op Council. The dinner was catered by Fran Larrew who was glad to have her daughters, Kristi, from Colorado Springs and Ginger, from Fort Collins came to lend a hand.

Another highlight of Thursday, May lst was that we had a nice rain shower of around four tenths about town, however south of Kit Carson our friends had an inch of rain. This year the pastures are green and it is so wonderful compared to the brownish pastures we saw most all last year.

A bus of West Ender Senior Citizens headed for the Blossom Festival in Canon City Saturday. They enjoyed seeing the parade and sites as well as dining out. I remember when our children were in the Eads Band and they marched in the Blossom Festival parade. It was a real fun time for us.

Happy Birthday to Doris on Saturday. Her brothers and sister were all out of town so I couldn’t take them out to dinner as I usually do. However, rather late that evening, here came Virgil Allen and Wanda, their girls, Glenda and Shannon, and children with a delicious four layer torte with a scrumptious soft frosting topped with crunched heath candy bars. Their kindness really touched our hearts, and of course it is always fun to see the little ones.

Saturday May 3rd was also a big day for the Stavely family. Craig, a 1999 Eads grad, graduated from the University of Southern Colorado at Pueblo with two degrees a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Economics with an emphasis in Finance and a minor in Business Administration.

He graduated Magna Cum Laude and was chosen to lead all the graduates into the Ceremonies. The remarkable student accomplished all this in four years with a start from earning credits from Lamar Community College while in high school. Craig’s parents are David and Jamie Stavely of McClave and grandparents, John and Elda Stavely of Haswell and Jamie’s grandmother, Dorothy Moss of Grand Island, Nebraska. John and Elda hosted the graduation dinner at the Golden Corral for family and friends.

I have awesome admiration for pastors who come out of retirement when God, says "GO" and they go …like Pastor Ralph Bullock who leaves the ranch southwest of Kit Carson on Saturday afternoons to go to Springfield. God bless this compassionate man and those with whom he shares "God’s Word" at three churches on Sunday in Baca County.

A tip of the hat to the Sheriff’s Report in the Press. Kiowa Countians appreciate the efforts of the law enforcement officers to "protect" our youth and our citizens. Hopefully people will work with the officers for a better community and that lessons will be learned.

Celena and Tearle dropped by Saturday. It’s amazing how fast they can get things done that take me so long to do.

Corynne Brackett was glad to have her family here form New Mexico and Colorado Springs. They came especially for James’ Confirmation at church.

Sunday morning a group of the FFA boys and girls took off for the State FFA meeting in Fort Collins.

Wednesday, May 14th the Eads Seniors and families and friends are invited to the Baccalaureate Services at the Assembly of God Church at 7:00 pm. The Ministerial Alliance of the county is hosting these services.

The Drama Club will be presenting a play at the Crow-Luther Fine Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. Thursday the 15th.

We had a lovely e-mail from Kelly and Jane Lujan in Albuquerque, New Mexico, announcing the graduation of their daughter, Amber, from New Mexico State University. She has been accepted to graduate school at Perdue University and is already employed as an electrical engineer at Sandia National Labs.

We had a letter from Pvt. Kevin McNamara from Ft. Sill Army base. I think he is excited that he will be stationed in Hawaii. We enjoy the bulletins that he sends us from the Lutheran Church he attends. He sent a photo he had taken of a storm that he titled, "Final Destination" and likened it to his training that he will go through the hard times to reach his final destination of Army graduation.

Lois McCracken boarded her son, Andrew’s 18 wheeler truck which was loaded with sheep from Greeley Saturday afternoon and rode to her brother, Elden Reinert’s home in Lamar. Andrew went on to San Angelo, Texas, unloaded the sheep and then took cattle from a ranch adjoining President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, TX on to Kansas. Meanwhile, Elden and Glendoris, and Lois went to Holly to pick up Mary Reinert to attend a Reinert family reunion Sunday at Laken, Kansas.
