About Town

Willie Mays’ family hosted a noon lunch and 90th birthday party for him at the historical Kit Carson Saloon Sunday. Many family and friends came from long distances to celebrate the day with him. Willie grew up at Eads and was glad to have brother, Max and sister-in-law, Maxine Mays of Eads came to the party.

Sincere sympathy to Robert Weil’s family in the loss of is wife, Marsha, who had suffered 12 years with kidney problems. His address is 2521 Cherry Blossom Lane, Bedford, Texas, 76021 for those wishing to send cards. Marsha’s mother-in-law is Alice Weil of Eads.

The entire Eads gym was set with lovely tables arranged with castle centerpieces for the Dinner Theatre. Drama Club members were dressed in medieval era costumes of elegant long dresses or attired as jesters and other royal fairy tale characters. Ryan Trosper gleaned a lot of laughs with all his "croak croaks" as the prince frog who tried to please the princess, Briana Kerfoot. Director Carolyn Crumpton’s students had arranged a beautiful stage and programs. Jamie Richardson had spent much of the week, cutting out the centers of round loaves of bread to hold a choice of potato soup or chili and complimented with pastries from the dessert bar.

Welcome home to our good friends Laverne and Ilene Eder and Larry and Nola Engstrom who returned last week from Arizona. Hope to see them at the Senior Citizen’s dinner the 16th.

Our sincere sympathy to the family of Dr. Vernon Vanderwork DVM who has been a resident at Weisbrod Nursing Home for several years. He was blest to have his parents buy a home across the street from Weisbrod and his sister, Sylvia Sheilds and other family members were here almost daily to support him.

The Eads Track team won many honors at the Deerfield, Kansas meet. I see by the box scores that the girls were sixth place in team scores and the boys team were fourth behind three large Kansas schools. Some of the individual winners mentioned were: Holly Watson, Treva Richardson, Jessica Watts, Lacy Adamson, Keyvis Gilmore, Anthony Voss, Casey Gibbs, and Bruce Laird. The baseball team spit games at Cheyenne Wells Saturday and played at Springfield on Tuesday.

Janet McDaniel was in Yuma, Arizona for several weeks with her mother-in-law, Beulah who had a knee replaced. Rhonda Kreuger visited us last Thursday after she had been down to Lamar Community College. Rhonda said that their family is looking forward for her grandmother, Beulah, to drive herself home to Eads to spend the summer.

Let us all remember to pray for Mike and Char (Woelk) Korrell of Cheyenne Wells on his long road to healing after that serious surgery. God Bless and be with their family.

As I was watching the news on television Sunday, it showed the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. It reminded me of when Virg and I visited there. Our son-in-law’s brother, Roy Griswould, is buried there from the WWII. We were surprised to be given a map that was easy to locate his grave. It’s sad but an awesome feeling to be there.

Some Eads and Chivington ladies met at the bank board room last Tuesday for the meeting of the Chivington Friends Women. The Bible Study was led by Suzanne Williams.

Congratulations to my daughter-in-law, Bonnie Lessenden, on the nice award of being named "Southeastern Colorado Cattlewoman of the Year." We are proud of her and the nice news article about her life.

Sincere sympathy to the family of Ida Thompson of Kit Carson. God bless and comfort this family is the prayer of their friends. Ida was Maxine Mays’ fifth grade teacher.

Rachel took me on a country drive on trails I don’t often get to see. We enjoyed the drive. I realized that we need so much rain. Our county is so dry.

By the sight of all the cars at the Kiowa Fairgrounds Community Building, there was a large turn out of folks who attended the informational meetings on the Sand Creek Massacre National Historical Site last week.

Corynne Brackett and her children were glad to have her parents come from Taos, New Mexico, and her two sisters and other family members from Colorado Springs for the weekend.

I am humbly pleased with the writing of Melissa Peterson who featured my son, Dwight, as the Artist of the Week from the Plains Art Gallery. Virg and I always found joy in all his interests and talents.

It was interesting to meet three young men from the country of Hungary Sunday in Kit Carson, especially since my parents were from Austria. They were mechanical engineers who were interested in seeing our church and the museum.

We had a letter from Gary and Thada Hart who are packing up in South Texas. They are heading back to Colorado by way of Indiana and Michigan. Now they are going to miss seeing their beautiful pink tree blooming in their front yard. This week the trees, bushes, and bulb flowers are especially beautiful about town.

I have another great grand’s quilt finished; it is really pretty with an iris design set in purple and a bit of gold. I think little Blake will like this one. Now for little sister.

Areta Laird accompanied Doris Lessenden to a reception for donors of scholarships at Lamar Community College. Doris was recognized by receiving a large plaque and blooming plant for her years of service on the LCC Foundation Board. Doris was pleased to see Brandi Roberson at the party who is a President’s Scholarship recipient

Many, many people took advantage of the services of the Community Health Fair.

Thank you, to organizers, Renay Seifried, Sherry Emmert, and Marge Miller who were the main organizers and to all the volunteers who worked to make this possible. As some of us know the results has saved some lives in this county.

Wanda, Marisa and Dylan Dixon visited us Saturday morning. They brought us an azalea plant. I do enjoy blooming plants.
