About TownApril 11, 2003 Maxine Hockett of Eads was thrilled to see her daughter, Marilyn (Baker) Quinn on the evening television news last week! Marilyn and Tom have moved to Colorado from Deleware where she worked in the State Department with a similar program to Colorado’s College Invest. When Marilyn read about this program and applied for a job, she was hired right away. Her mother said, "There was my daughter on television with young students!" Of course it is nice to have her daughter closer to home. Eugene Burmood of Ordway, age 97, passed away last week. I remember when he used to come to the Brandon School reunion during the County Fair since he lived there before moving to Ordway. We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Lorinda McFarlane, a long time resident of the Towner community. She has many friends throughout Kiowa County. God bless and comfort this family is the prayer of their friends. Thursday evening as we were leaving for Lamar to attend the Denim and Lace Square Dance and Clogger Performance, I was so surprised when my daughter walked in. She had come from Kansas to attend her grandson’s dance revue. We really enjoyed the awesome production by 589 dancers from the very small to high school age. It was very enjoyable to see it all come together so beautifully. By the program, I read that Eads students, Alyssa Hadley, Tasha Hueller, Karissa Sicklebower, Derrick Shotton, and Jacob Buck were a part of this colorful group. Bill and Dorie Musgrave visited in Craig last weekend and accompanied his father, Ken, and sister, Robin, back to Eads for a visit. Fans like to hear about baseball player, Scott Elarton. I understand that his wife, the former Laurie Reystead, and her parents, Mike and Debbie Reystead of Haswell, attend many of his games around the nation. We have seen several baseball games in Eads where the Eads Eagle team has won by big scores. Their next game will be at Cheyenne Wells, Friday the 11th. Because of the cold weather last Saturday, the game with Stratton was called off as well as both track meets in Burlington and Walsh. Crowley high school will be playing the Eagles at the Eads field this Saturday, April 12th at 10:00 a.m. Faye Barber has yet another quilt ready for the Safe House for women and families. It is a block quilt in red, white, and blue colors. Other ladies have what I’m told are wall hangings in the quilting frames at the Center. While we were playing cards, we saw, Pam Addington and Mary Anne Hulteen, putting yet another wall hanging in a frame. There are two beautiful afghans on display at the Center. The pretty afghans will make some children very happy. We are proud of all our talented people and appreciate them for sharing their talents. Henry Ashida of Ordway was over Monday afternoon. He brought some of his really good photographs to display for our teams and gave a number of photos to students as well as a nice album to Coach Shawn Randel. Henry is a retired teacher but he stays really involved in the area sports programs and is a sports writer, substitute teacher at three valley schools and has a part time job with the state department. He and Doris really love and support our youth and have done so for years. Thanks, Henry. Tom and Juanita (Jacobs) Olson were here last weekend to continue their yard work and home remodeling. She was glad to have a phone call from her grandson, Kevin McNamara, who is in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and from her son, Chris Stowell, who is in the Army also. Chris is stationed at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri. Becky Puls and a girl friend were home from Dallas, Texas, recently, where they study at Criswell Baptist College. Becky enjoys college even though she works at three jobs.

We hear that some of our "snowbirds" who have spent the winter in Arizona are heading home. We’ll be happy to see them. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Garner left last Wednesday for their new home in north Denver. Their sons, Jim and Gale, were here to assist their parents in the move. Doris Lessenden was in Lamar three days last week at Lamar Community College as part of a committee to select the scholarship recipients. My grandson, raked leaves and twigs in my backyard with the helping hands of his mom and sister. It’s so nice to have that "spring cleaning" done and to discover the peach blooming. Bill and Charlotte Woelk spent two days in Denver with their daughter, Charlene, and family. Their son-in-law, Mike Korrell, had a serious sixteen hour surgery on his neck and throat. Many people are praying for their family and Mike’s recovery. It is nice to know that one of our former Eads graduates, Shelly Holthus, is one of Mike’s nurses. Shelly has been a friend of the Woelk girls, Cathy and Charlene and family for years. Sometimes the best way we can communicate with old friends is by the telephone. Clara and Johnnie Uhland say they mostly stay home. They are glad to have a nurse or family member stay with them. Congratulations to the Eads Elementary School students and teachers on being named a "Distinguished School". They are one of only two schools in the state who will receive a $10,000.00 award. This is based on academic performance and is not an award that is applied for. What an honor! How awesome! We were pleased to see Eads’ Keyvis Gilmore’s photo in the Sunday Denver Post as the Class 1A Player of the Year. Coach Shawn Randel’s photo was in another section shown as the Coach of the Year for both girls and boys teams in Colorado. Ryan Trosper was listed in the All State First Team and Randy Wilson of Kit Carson was listed on the All-State Second Team and Steven Gilmore was listed on the Honorable Mention Team. Treva Richardson of Eads and Lenay Goble of McClave was named to the Class 1A First Team and on the Second Team were Tiffanie Gooden of Eads, Chandra Mayhan of Kit Carson and Kylee Staveley of McClave My granddaughters had a good time traveling to Pueblo Sunday with their mom, Wanda Lessenden and Celena Lessenden was in Alamosa for a few days. They like to frequent the fabric shops. We were blessed to wake up to a snowfall Sunday morning. By afternoon, it was melted. Our yards, grass, and wheat are very thirsty
