About TownApril 4, 2003 Even though it was a bitterly cold day a number of folks met at the Senior Citizen’s Center for the monthly pot luck dinner. Next month ham will be the main dish for the April 16th meeting. Sincere sympathy to the families of Louis James and Debi Barton whose uncle passed away. The James family went to Boise City Saturday for the services. We drove out to see the "done job" of planting the trees for the living wind break. Looks like a job well done on the north side of the road across from the Golf Course Thanks to the adult and teen volunteers who planted over 800 trees on Saturday braving the cold winds. Monday evening there was a big turn out at the Community Celebration Supper for the Eads High School girls and boys’ basketball teams and their coaches, Shawn Randel, Billy Koehler, and Lane Gooden, who won both the gold ball trophies for the championship at the Colorado State Basketball Tournament. Mike Ullman of the Eads Chamber of Commerce announced that they will be giving the team members chenille basketballs. According to radio reports Eads seniors, Treva Richardson and Keyvis Gilmore were named most Valuable Players of the IA schools and Coach Shawn Randel was named "Outstanding Coach" last week. Jessica Borns and Sarah Myers from Dallas were in Eads over the weekend. It is good that they can get a break to come home to visit with her parents, Gary and Kristie Borns. Faye Barber brought a beautifully pieced quilt to the Center that she had finished for us to see. She has made several for a shelter for battered women in Denver. God bless this kind, giving lady for her labor of love. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howard entertained visitors a couple of times last week. Some were from Kansas and the others came from Nebraska. Last Tuesday we watched the Eads Baseball Team play Vilas. The Eads team looked really strong. It is nice that Will Johnson and Randy Wilson of Kit Carson can play with the Eads team since there are not enough boys to field a team. The Eagle team is coached by Brian Kinnamon and Billy Koehler. Their next game will be in Eads Thursday. Our sincere sympathy to the family of Harold Cloyd who formerly lived at Haswell. They have many friends throughout the area. Harold passed away at his home in Idaho. We were happy to hear that Frankie and Rosemary Stoker of Haswell drew a nice prize of a vacuum cleaner at the district Southeast Power Company annual meeting in Lamar Thursday. Harvey Kelley was lucky to win $50.00. I remember what a thrill we used to have when we won prizes. Despite the terrible wind and dust 14 people went down on the county bus and a number of couples car pooled to the dinner meeting.

Barb Seay drove to Burlington Saturday to visit Mike Arth. They usually have lunch together on a weekend day. Congratulations to the 4-H members from Kiowa County who won so many of the top honors at the District Fun Festival Talent Show at Otero Junior College last week. This puts them in line to perform at the Colorado State Fair. March has lived up to its reputation this year by bringing one of the worst blizzards to the mountains and Front Range towns in recent history. We also had a lot of cold winds. I’m looking forward to April showers and pray they come through. Glenda and Colby Stoker were in Eads on business Friday. We were happy they dropped by to visit. It is always nice to see them. Sunday we saw Donna Owens on her cute red moped buzzing about town. She was giving her grandsons rides. What fun. Margie Wiltfang’s family had a brunch for her at a Limon restaurant with a pretty birthday cake. A number of family members converged there to celebrate with her and Faye Barber who accompanied her from Eads. Haswell senior citizens hosted their monthly supper and card party Sunday evening. It’s always a fun time for all. I’m glad that my granddaughter, Celena, can be home for a break from La Veta. She has been snowed in with over three feet of snow on her car. Praise God for the snow in the mountains. Many people are watching the happenings of the war in Iraq these days. Even more people are prayerful for our county, our men and women and our leaders. I like the idea that we should remember to pray at 7:00 p.m. or at noon when many people will be praying across this nation.
