Obituary - Edith Maria Loflin, 97

Edith Maria Loflin was born on May 14, 1905 in Forest Lake, Minnesota to Ida Gunnarson Johnson and Frank J. Peterson. She was the third child of four, baptized as an infant, took her catechism as a teenager and joined Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Wild Horse. At that time, the church wasn’t built so the confirmation was held at the Wild Horse School. She attended her grade school years at the Penn School and Peterson School and graduated from the Kit Carson High School in 1924. She went to Greeley Teachers College and taught school at the South Star School, the Brown School and the Wild Horse School. She quit teaching when she and Roy Loflin were married in 1931. They lived north of Sorrento, on a farm.

Edith was very faithful to her church. At times when the Sunday classes failed to keep the doors open, she saw that they were opened again and active with Vacation Bible School. They reached retirement age and moved to Las Animas. She loved gardening, canning and baking, getting many blue ribbons at the fair. She was a perfectionist at tatting and sewing.

After her husband’s death she moved to Eads, to be closer to family. As time passed, she became a resident of Cheyenne Manor in Cheyenne Wells in 1989 and resided there until the time of her death in March, 2003.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Julius and Malven Peterson, two nephews, one great nephew and one great niece. Surviving her is her sister Jennie Summers of Lakewood, nieces Betty Lou Dunivan of Lakewood, and Glaida Craven of Kit Carson, nephews Keith George of Amarillo, Texas, Merle Peterson of Taylor, Nebraska, Allen Peterson of Kit Carson, and Norman Peterson of Briggsdale. She also is survived by many great nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services for Edith Loflin were held on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kit Carson, with Pastor Bill Viergutz officiating. Jane Borns served as organist accompanying Doris Lessenden as vocalist. Final committal services were held at the Kit Carson Cemetery in Kit Carson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheyenne Manor in Cheyenne Wells. Brown Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
