Obituary - Lois Alidene Roberson, 86

Lois Alidene was born in her home in Harper, Kansas on February 26, 1916 to Otto Zinzoretta and Hallie (Campbell) Stuchal. Funeral services for Lois were held Monday, February 3, 2003 at the Community Church of Gunnison. She passed away at the Gunnison Health Care Center on January 29, 2003.

Upon graduating from Eads High School as Salutatorian, Lois headed off for Western State College in the fall of 1935 on a music scholarship. Undaunted by having to get out and help push the car to the top of Old Monarch Pass to get to the Gunnison Country for the first time, Lois soon fell in love with the valley and the people therein.

As a freshman, she met A.A. "Gus" Roberson, grandson of Gunnison homesteaders, who became her husband for the next 60 years. The two were married September 26, 1935 in Lamar.

Together, they moved to the family ranch where Lois "quit studying and started cooking for hay crews" of 12 and more cowhands at a time. She was a charger member of the Gunnison Cow Belles and was a rider in the Helldorado Girls organization. In addition to their home place about six miles north of Gunnison on Ohio Creek, they owned and operated the property now known as the Castle Mountain Ranch which they sold in 1943.

In addition to helping run the family ranch, Lois, spent her time raising two children, Gary and Sandy. Lois also worked as a billing clerk for several years for the City of Gunnison and was a devoted member of the Community Church of Gunnison.

Gus and Lois sold their ranch in the 1950’s. After traveling out of Gunnison for several years, they moved to Amarillo, Texas where Lois was employed in the billing department of a pharmacy. The Robersons returned to Gunnison in 1978 where they lived the rest of their lives.

Lois joyfully rejoined many of her former bridge clubs and renewed close friendships. She spent much of her time fishing, playing with grandchildren and gardening.

Survivors include her sister, Mary Teti of Henderson; son Gary Roberson (Ellen) of Fort Collins and daughter Sandy Dowis (Bill) of Gunnison. Lois is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to Gunnison Health Care Center and Gunnison Hospice.
