Drought Planning and Survival Seminar

The current drought has severely impacted the economic, social, and ecological sustainability of ranch operations throughout Colorado. Colorado State University Cooperative Extension (CSU-CE) in conjunction with the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) is offering a Drought Planning and Survival Seminar that will help producers understand the economic, social, and ecological impacts of drought on their operation, mitigate the impacts of drought, and recover form drought.

Participants will learn important skills including evaluating the economic and social impacts of drought on the family and ranch operation, maintaining the economic viability of their ranching operation, and avoiding family conflict and stresses that often accompany drought. In addition, ranch families will develop an understanding of the

drought management planning process including inventory and monitoring of ranch and range resources, adjusting stocking rates to potential forage production, herd and grazing management decisions and alternatives, and the value of alternative ranch enterprises.

The seminar will be held March 21, 2003 at the Otero Junior College Student Center in La Junta, Colorado. Pre-registration fees, due by March 17, 2003, are $30 per family or ranch, $20 per individual, and $15 per student. Late registration will be accepted at the door for an additional $5. For more information or a pre-registration form contact the Kiowa County Extension Office.
